Before putting my head down, I checked the early referendum results coming in just after midnight.<\/p>\n<p>Remain squeaked it in Newcastle, and Sunderland went strongly for Leave. It seemed as though it was going to be tighter than expected\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009but knowing I\u2019d have to remember correlation matrices and dozens of formulas, I went to sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe about half-past-six or seven o\u2019clock I awoke, checked my phone and gasped an expletive.
