A NEW study estimates Brexit has cut UK economic output by around six per-cent, with economists citing weaker growth, uncertainty and new trade barriers since the referendum.<\/p>\n
The analysis, based on internal data from the Bank of England, suggests that about half the impact came from post-referendum uncertainty.<\/p>\n
It also reported the rest was driven by reduced trade with the EU following the UK\u2019s exit from the single market under Brexit.<\/p>\n
Researchers say the effect has built up gradually over the past decade, leaving the UK economy smaller than it would otherwise have been.<\/p>\n
In Fermanagh, major employers say they have adjusted to the new trading environment but continue to face higher costs and administrative burdens.<\/p>\n
Derrylin-based glass producer Encirc said it had to establish new customs systems after Brexit came into force, describing the transition as a period of rapid change and adjustment.<\/p>\n
Managing director Sean Murphy said that while operations have largely stabilised, Brexit has left a lasting legacy.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is now closer to business as usual, but the reality is an extra layer of cost and complexity for our business,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Mannok also said Brexit had added pressure to cross-border trade, alongside wider global instability including Covid-19 and geopolitical tensions.<\/p>\n
CEO Dara O\u2019Reilly said bureaucracy and uncertainty around goods moving between Ireland and Britain remain key challenges, even as the company continues to invest.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur sense is that Brexit has significantly constrained the UK economy with knock-on impacts for overall consumer confidence and demand,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
