and how &#8211; to open up for the England game in the World Cup on Sunday night, after the Government announced that previous licensing restrictions were being dropped on the eve of the big game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Yesterday, <a aria-label=\"Bristol Live reported that pub landlordsLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/pubs-prepare-early-hours-england-11041615\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Bristol Live reported that pub landlords<\/a> who had prepared in advance for the prospect of England playing a last 16 game in the World Cup which would kick off at 1am on a Monday morning, were able to open because they had got a special event licence request in early.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">But the landlords of <a aria-label=\"other pubs and clubs were complainingLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/pubs-prepare-early-hours-england-11041615\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">other pubs and clubs were complaining<\/a> that they had been told they needed ten days\u2019 notice to get a \u2018TEN\u2019 &#8211; Pubs staying open till the final whistle is good news for supporters and good news for the pubs and venues that bring our communities together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe whole country will be backing the team. Come on England!\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">But staying open late into Monday morning presents challenges for pub landlords &#8211; the main one being finding staff willing to work until 5am, and also not knowing exactly how much of an appetite there will be among England fans to go out and watch the game in a pub in the middle of the night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Greene King said around 600 of its 2,600 pubs, restaurants and hotels would be staying open for the game, but <a aria-label=\"Wetherspoons said only five of its 800 pubsLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/pubs-say-stay-closed-despite-11042712\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Wetherspoons said only five of its 800 pubs<\/a> would be showing the match.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In Bristol, some pubs &#8211; like the Rising Sun in Ashton, the May Tree in Headley Park and the New Inn at Keynsham &#8211; already paid for the licences and had plans in place to stay open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The landlord of the Three Lions in <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bedminster\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Bedminster<\/a>, Sean Donnelly, was one who thought they would have to close before the game, after he was told he couldn\u2019t get a licence at short notice, but with the Prime Minister\u2019s announcement, he now can open up the famously patriotic South Bristol pub.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"England fans go wild at the Ashton Gate sports bar as England beat Croatia in the first game of the World Cup - June 17, 2026\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/0_BRI_PG_170626world_cup-78.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"England fans go wild at the Ashton Gate sports bar as England beat Croatia in the first game of the World Cup - June 17, 2026\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">England fans go wild at the Ashton Gate sports bar as England beat Croatia in the first game of the World Cup &#8211; June 17, 2026(Image: PAUL GILLIS \/ Reach Plc)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He has decided to open the Three Lions, but is creating a ticketed event, with guests paying \u00a37 for entry, which gets them a free drink. \u201cWe\u2019ll have normal Sunday hours, and then tickets only from 11pm, but no tickets sold on Sunday itself, so the people who want to come to the Three Lions need to get a ticket on Friday or Saturday,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re expecting it to be busy, but we will have a much-reduced capacity,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Ashton Gate\u2019s Independence Sports Bar is also opening for the game, with food and DJ entertainment.
