{"id":106734,"date":"2025-05-16T16:35:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-16T16:35:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/106734\/"},"modified":"2025-05-16T16:35:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-16T16:35:10","slug":"new-theory-suggests-dark-matter-is-frozen-relics-of-light-speed-particles-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/106734\/","title":{"rendered":"New Theory Suggests Dark Matter Is Frozen Relics of Light-Speed Particles : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an ongoing quest to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dark-matter-could-be-evolving-and-the-implications-are-profound\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guess the secret behind<\/a> the Universe&#8217;s excess in gravity, two researchers from Dartmouth College in the US have proposed a chilling union between massless particles soon after the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/big-bang\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73033\" data-postid=\"161663\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Big Bang<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For the better part of a century it&#8217;s been frustratingly clear that estimates of the Universe&#8217;s visible mass have failed to account for the way galaxies rotate, pointing to slow-moving clumps of matter we can&#8217;t see. This stuff has been dubbed &#8216; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dark-matter\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73017\" data-postid=\"161663\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">dark matter<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>Even as researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/we-could-be-just-10-seconds-away-from-discovering-dark-matter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">whittle away at the list<\/a> of properties <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/brightest-space-explosion-ever-may-hide-an-elusive-dark-matter-particle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">describing this cold and silent corner<\/a> of physics, its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/d-star-hexaquark-particles-could-be-responsible-for-creating-dark-matter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">identity and origins<\/a> remain elusive.<\/p>\n<p>Physicists Guanming Liang and Robert Caldwell picture a newborn cosmos sizzling with massless particles zooming about at high speed \u2013 a form of matter that has more in common with light than with cold chunks of darkness.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, particles within this fog of high-energy material collided and cooled, leaving them with the required mass to explain the Universe&#8217;s unseen source of gravity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s totally antithetical to what dark matter is thought to be \u2013 it is cold lumps that give galaxies their mass,&#8221; Caldwell <a href=\"https:\/\/home.dartmouth.edu\/news\/2025\/05\/did-dark-matter-form-when-fast-particles-got-heavy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our theory tries to explain how it went from being light to being lumps.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/dark_matter_galaxy_642.jpg\" alt=\"galaxy\" width=\"642\" height=\"450\" class=\"wp-image-161672 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Galaxies rotate as if they have more mass concentrated in their centers than meets the eye. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/photos\/MADmTIGInkk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science Photo Library\/Getty Images<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Roughly 13.7 billion years ago, when the whole Universe was crammed into a space that would easily fit in a gap in your teeth, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-quark-discovery-reveals-a-critical-clue-about-the-birth-of-the-universe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a quantum party was underway<\/a>. Particles of all varieties were zooming about, bumping and grinding for want of room to move.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nambu%E2%80%93Jona-Lasinio_model\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nambu and Jona-Lasinio model<\/a> of nucleon synthesis, one particular class of these particles known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dirac_fermion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dirac fermions<\/a> could buddy up in a very similar manner to the way electrons combine to form <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/physicists-find-superconducting-electron-couples-acting-as-a-new-state-of-matter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cooper pairs<\/a> in superconductors.<\/p>\n<p>Though the physics behind the activity is complex (even for quantum mechanics), there are implications for cosmological growth, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dark-matter-may-have-existed-before-the-big-bang-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cosmic inflation<\/a> to later expansion. Yet all have been based on assumptions that the temperature of this space remained fairly balanced.<\/p>\n<p>Liang and Caldwell wondered what might happen if other thermal properties of this process were taken into account. What if an imbalance in the partnerships between some hypothetical high-energy Dirac  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-standard-model\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73024\" data-postid=\"161663\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">fermions<\/a> resulted in them converting their insane energy to mass, effectively freezing them?<\/p>\n<p>The product would be like turning a thundercloud into a hailstorm.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The most unexpected part of our mathematical model was the energy plummet that bridges the high-density energy and the lumpy low energy,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/home.dartmouth.edu\/news\/2025\/05\/did-dark-matter-form-when-fast-particles-got-heavy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> Liang.<\/p>\n<p>The very fact Cooper pairs exist among electrons means no exotic activity is required to explain the emergence of these slow, dark matter particles. What&#8217;s more, the hypothesis could explain where so much of the energy in the early Universe went.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Structures get their mass due to the density of cold dark matter, but there also has to be a mechanism wherein energy density drops to close to what we see today,&#8221; Liang <a href=\"https:\/\/home.dartmouth.edu\/news\/2025\/05\/did-dark-matter-form-when-fast-particles-got-heavy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The mathematical model of our theory is really beautiful because it&#8217;s rather simplistic \u2013 you don&#8217;t need to build a lot of things into the system for it to work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Being simple is one thing. Proving it is another. Unlike so many proposals on the identity of the mysterious material known as dark matter, this theory could actually be tested using data we already have at hand.<\/p>\n<p>Transformations from hot, high-pressure loners to cold and slow marriages would leave a signature in the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/cosmic-microwave-background\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73031\" data-postid=\"161663\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">cosmic microwave background<\/a> \u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/universes-first-light-has-just-been-revealed-in-stunning-detail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">distorted background glow<\/a> of radiation that&#8217;s been bouncing around the Universe since its earliest moments.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/cmb_quipu_642.jpg\" alt=\"cosmic microwave background map\" width=\"642\" height=\"322\" class=\"wp-image-151464 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A map of the cosmic microwave background.
