{"id":1067816,"date":"2026-07-04T10:31:28","date_gmt":"2026-07-04T10:31:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1067816\/"},"modified":"2026-07-04T10:31:28","modified_gmt":"2026-07-04T10:31:28","slug":"merseyside-to-benefit-from-proposed-cancer-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1067816\/","title":{"rendered":"Merseyside to benefit from proposed cancer strategy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three quarters of cancer patients will survive for at least five years by 2035, the Government pledged today, as it announced a new 10-year cancer strategy that will benefit people living with the disease across the UK.<\/p>\n<p>The plan, announced on World Cancer Day, focusses on ensuring that cancer is detected as early as possible, and will see new measures introduced to verify test results and diagnoses.<\/p>\n<p>Mersey News Live understands that the strategy will work closely with Merseyside health institutions, organisations, and Liverpool City Council.<\/p>\n<p>According to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clatterbridgecc.nhs.uk\/about-us\/news\/new-cancer-early-diagnosis-strategy-cheshire-and-merseyside-launched\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Clatterbridge Cancer Centre<\/a>, this work will include an increase in Merseyside based lung cancer screenings due to higher rates of these forms of the disease in the region.<\/p>\n<p>These screenings will be carried out in Liverpool, Wirral, Sefton, Knowsley, St Helens, and Halton.<\/p>\n<p>There will also be at-home bowel cancer tests available.<\/p>\n<p>The Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance <a href=\"https:\/\/cmcanceralliance.nhs.uk\/news\/cheshire-and-merseyside-forefront-fight-against-lung-cancer-screening-hits-new-national-milestone\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have stated<\/a> that they aim to diagnose 75% of cancers at stage I or II by 2028.<\/p>\n<p>Under the strategy, every patient will receive a personalised support plan alongside an allocated care lead in order to tailor necessary care to the patient.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35208 lazyautosizes ls-is-cached lazyloaded\" alt=\"Prime Minister Keir Starmer\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Keir-Starmer-Alamy-300925-200x300.jpg\"  data- data-eio-rwidth=\"200\" data-eio-rheight=\"300\" \/>Prime Minister Keir Starmer.<br \/>Credit sst\/alamy live news<\/p>\n<p>The Merseyside region already boasts a strong cancer detection and support system through the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre trust.<\/p>\n<p>Clatterbridge Centre has been ranked 5th out of 121 cancer trusts in the UK for wait times.<\/p>\n<p>Data from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/statistics\/statistical-work-areas\/cancer-waiting-times\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NHS England\u00a0<\/a>shows that as of November 2025, 84.2% of patients at Clatterbridge underwent the process of first diagnosis to the start of their treatment in under a 62-day period.<\/p>\n<p>This is a considerable step above the national average, which shows that only 69.1% of cancer patients who were treated by other hospitals underwent this process within the same time frame.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cly139el05go\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BBC News<\/a>, Health Secretary Wes Streeting said: \u201cFor too long, we\u2019ve treated the tumour and left the patients to figure out the rest on their own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about the announcement, Keir Starmer said: \u201cThe future already looks brighter for the NHS.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tiktok-embed\" cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@luke_kavanagh_jou\/video\/7657891328314985750\" data-video-id=\"7657891328314985750\" data-embed-from=\"oembed\" style=\"max-width:605px;
