{"id":1069559,"date":"2026-07-05T07:49:28","date_gmt":"2026-07-05T07:49:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1069559\/"},"modified":"2026-07-05T07:49:28","modified_gmt":"2026-07-05T07:49:28","slug":"egg-vandals-cause-hundreds-of-pounds-of-damage-at-independent-bookshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1069559\/","title":{"rendered":"Egg vandals cause hundreds of pounds of damage at independent bookshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AN independent book\u00adshop that has been a staple store in West Hampstead for 32 years was attacked in an egging causing nearly \u00a31,000 in damages.<\/p>\n<p>West End Lane Books, the store owned and run by the Fergiani family, was vandalised by three young boys who \u201cbarrelled\u201d into the shop and threw over a dozen eggs all over the bookshops stock causing hundreds of pounds in damage.<\/p>\n<p>General manager Jess Allan said: \u201cIt caused a lot of chaos, as anything the eggs touched just had to be scrubbed or thrown out, it was almost worse than paint and the smell of it was awful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey barrelled in and started throwing eggs everywhere, they didn\u2019t actually hit a person fortunately and the only person they aimed at was the bookseller behind the counter who nimbly ducked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey also targeted the Sainsbury\u2019s Local \u2013 but there was a moment where we were thinking why do you hate us? What have we done that you would want to do that, but targeting more than one shop just reinforces it was meaningless nonsense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cMaybe they thought they could just get away with it but it is a bit garbage because running a community bookshop comes with its difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are always going to be high periods and low periods and you have to just make it work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are a smaller shop and that kind of damage might seem like something careless or funny but we had to close for three or four hours, scrub and categorise the damaged books. It\u2019s a huge amount of work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-247930\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/eggs-1-1024x724.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"724\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>The bookshop which also has sister branches in Queen\u2019s Park and Columbia Road Market said while \u00a3800 of stock was damaged, publishers and the community rallied together to get the bookshop back open and check in on their staff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have had a lot of support from the publishers saying if their books are damaged they will replace them and some have just sent books to replace shelf space,\u201d said Ms Allan, who has been working at the shop since the Covid pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cWe\u2019re very fortunate the publishers have been so generous and that a lot of the damages have been recouped but it\u2019s also just really demoralising \u2013 a lot of our staff are quite young and work really hard to try to make it nice for our customers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a horrible blip but we\u2019re really grateful to everyone that has been so kind to us and we\u2019re really thankful for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-247929\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/eggs-2-1024x724.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"724\"  \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>West End Lane books is well known for authors dropping into sign copies of their work, including Milly Goldsmith with Things I Told My Notes App<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ms Allan said one of the sole focuses of the bookshop was to get young people interested in reading.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe sell to the community but the basic belief of the family that have opened the shops is about the transformative nature of reading for young people wherever you are,\u201d she said, \u201cIt is a core part of what we are \u2013 so to have these children come in \u2013 and do this was shocking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur staff banded together and it is really nice the community has made a point to reach out and speak to them as it can be really humiliating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: \u201cWe recognise the impact that anti-social behaviour can have on local businesses and the community and an investigation is under way into this incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn Tuesday, June 23 at 10:56, police were called to reports of criminal damage at a bookshop in West End Lane, West Hampstead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOfficers attended and took a report that three men had entered the premises and thrown a number of eggs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn investigation is ongoing and officers continue to pursue several lines of enquiry, including CCTV analysis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone with information that may assist police is asked to call 101 quoting CAD 5217\/23Jun.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"AN independent book\u00adshop that has been a staple store in West Hampstead for 32 years was attacked in&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":1069560,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","_share_on_mastodon":"0"},"categories":[7757],"tags":[748,108626,188,393,4884,257,18394,16,15,43271],"class_list":["post-1069559","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-london","tag-britain","tag-caitlin-maskell","tag-crime","tag-england","tag-great-britain","tag-london","tag-the-camden-new-journal","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-west-hampstead"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/116866277079205923","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1069559","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1069559"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1069559\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/1069560"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1069559"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1069559"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1069559"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
