A.Wong’s two Michelin-starred site on Wilton Road serves its last lunch and dinner on Saturday 1st August, then shuts for a full refurbishment. From Tuesday 18 August, Wong will run a temporary residency inside Mandarin Oriental Mayfair on Hanover Square, in the private dining rooms next to what’s now Atrium Restaurant.

It’s not been the smoothest opening for the MO Mayfair, which originally launched with every restaurant and bar in partnership with Akira Back, a chef who wasn’t especially well known in London before he arrived. Every one of those sites has since closed. Even the chef’s table Korean concept, which was renamed and won its own Michelin star under Back’s former protégé Jihun Kim, shut just five weeks later when Kim left. Odder still, Back opened a second London restaurant at the Montcalm Mayfair while he was still operating inside the MO Mayfair.

Wong’s residency runs on his Collections of China 31 course tasting menus, regular and vegetarian, for dinner only. Expect dishes like the chilled “smacked” cucumber with trout roe, chilli and garlic vinegar, the “Memories of Peking Duck” with foie gras and smoked duck dim sum, and “Why we don’t need to eat shark’s fin soup.” Sadly his famous lunchtime dim sum, doesn’t look like it’s making the trip to Mayfair. The residency is due to close in late September, after which Wong moves back into Wilton Road once the refurbishment is done.
