as new heatwave builds, WHO warns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">July 7 (Reuters) &#8211; The World Health Organization warned on Tuesday that Europe could face \u201cmore deadly weeks\u201d ahead, with another intense \u200cheatwave forming over the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Here are more details:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u2022 Temperatures in \u200cPortugal and southern Spain are expected to climb to 43 degrees Celsius (109 degrees Fahrenheit) \u200bin the coming days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u2022 WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge held an emergency call on Monday with representatives from 41 countries in the region, the European Commission and civil society groups to discuss lessons \u200cfrom the recent heatwave \u2060and preparations for the next one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u2022 Kluge said in a statement that countries with heat-health action plans in \u2060place responded more quickly and better protected their populations during the June heatwave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u2022 However, he said that less than half of WHO&#8217;s European member \u200bstates had \u200bsuch a plan in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u2022 \u200bExperts have said the June \u200c20-28 heatwave was the most severe recorded in Europe, causing disruption to power generation, damaging infrastructure and overwhelming healthcare systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u2022 The extreme heat was almost certainly driven by climate change, scientists said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u2022 France, the Netherlands and Belgium recorded 3,700 excess deaths, with authorities warning that the \u200cnumbers are preliminary and could rise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u2022 \u200bTemperatures hit 40 degrees Celsius in parts \u200bof Europe during the heatwave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u2022 \u200bKluge said care home residents, homeless people and \u200csocially isolated older adults were still \u200bnot being reached \u200bconsistently across Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u2022 &#8220;The work now is on two fronts: fixing what failed in recent weeks before the next heatwave hits and \u200bbuilding the kind of \u200chealth systems that don\u2019t just respond to extreme heat but \u200bare ready for it,&#8221;
