Another iconic music venue <\/a>which has hosted the likes of Oasis<\/a> and Arctic Monkeys<\/a> has had to close its doors<\/a> after being evicted by their landlord.<\/p>\n

The Leadmill in Sheffield announced last night they lost their eviction appeal despite being \u2018one of the most beloved and historic music venues\u2019. <\/p>\n

They have been ordered to leave within the next three months, with both the public and famous artists revealing their heartbreak. <\/p>\n

Liam Gallagher<\/a> said the closure was \u2018scandalous\u2019, and others have flocked to share their memories. <\/p>\n

\u2018Common People\u2019 group\u00a0Pulp\u00a0<\/a>played their first-ever gig at the venue in August 1980, with\u00a0frontman Jarvis Cocker<\/a>\u00a0pledging to back the club after hearing about the eviction notice.<\/p>\n

Jonathan Oxley wrote: \u2018You wouldn\u2019t believe how said this is. If you\u2019ve grown up with The Leadmill as a staple in your life, you must support their next steps and keep its legacy alive.\u2019 <\/p>\n

The Leadmill said: \u2018Despite overwhelming public support, high-profile backing from artists and a hard fought campaign to save The Leadmill, the legal challenge was sadly unsuccesful. <\/p>\n

A lengthy legal battle was sparked in 2022 when the Electric Group, which also owns Electric Brixton in\u00a0London<\/a>\u00a0and other venues in Bristol and\u00a0Newcastle<\/a>, issued an eviction notice.<\/p>\n

They claimed they hoped to keep the site as a music venue, and said it will invest \u2018substantially\u2019 when it takes over the club.<\/p>\n

It comes as \u00a0as live music has dwindled across\u00a0London<\/a>\u00a0and the rest of the UK \u2013 with many beloved places unable to compete with developers snapping up properties.<\/p>\n

Many venues have faced extensive challenges in recent years, following the Covid pandemic and the of cost-of-living crisis.<\/p>\n

In 2024, around a quarter of the 810 grassroots venues supported by the Music Venue Trust across the UK had to ask for help from the organisation\u2019s Emergency Response Service to avoid permanent closure.<\/p>\n

Now, just 179 grassroots venues remain in London.<\/p>\n

Metro has joined forces with the Mayor of London\u00a0Sadiq Khan<\/a>\u00a0and top music industry figures to put the capital\u2019s grassroots music scene centre stage.<\/p>\n

A new interpretation of London\u2019s Tube map show stations replaces with the names of artists and locations that form part of the capital\u2019s music heritage.<\/p>\n

That includes new stars like Loyle Carner, Arlo Parks and SAULT filling in the stops on the Piccadilly line, and legends like Billy Bragg,\u00a0Adele<\/a>\u00a0and Madness on the Northern line.<\/p>\n
