{"id":1078322,"date":"2026-07-09T11:32:28","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T11:32:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1078322\/"},"modified":"2026-07-09T11:32:28","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T11:32:28","slug":"earth-has-a-quasi-moon-lurking-nearby-and-these-are-the-first-images-of-the-space-object-that-prove-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1078322\/","title":{"rendered":"Earth Has a \u2018Quasi-Moon\u2019 Lurking Nearby, and These Are the First Images of the Space Object That Prove It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Chinese <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/chinas-tianwen-2-launches-to-retrieve-samples-from-mysterious-asteroid-kamooalewa\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tianwen-2 mission<\/a> has captured the first imagery of a space object that some astronomers are calling Earth\u2019s \u201cquasi-moon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The object was captured in images released by the <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/?s=CnSA#:~:text=CHINA%20REVEALS%20ITS%20NEWEST%20PLANS%20FOR%20SPACE%20DOMINANCE\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China National Space Administration<\/a> (CNSA), after its Tianwen-2 spacecraft reached the tiny asteroid 469219 Kamo\u02bboalewa. Initially discovered in 2016, the asteroid became the target of a sample return mission launched by China on 28 May 2025.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Officially <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/china-says-it-wants-to-kill-an-asteroid\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the CNSA\u2019s<\/a> second mission under its Planetary Exploration of China Program, Tianwen-2 aims to return close to 100 grams of samples from the surface of the small object.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Earth\u2019s Mysterious Quasi-Moons<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/earth-will-temporarily-have-a-mini-moon-in-its-orbit-until-late-november\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Quasi-moons<\/a> are the name astronomers have for small, very distant objects that do not impact our planet\u2019s tides or possess other characteristics associated with our primary moon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These objects are nonetheless considered moon-like because they remain in our celestial neighborhood for extended periods, providing unique opportunities for studying <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/nasa-tracked-two-near-earth-objects-during-their-recent-close-approaches-one-wasnt-traveling-alone\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">near-Earth objects<\/a> (NEOs) like asteroids, and the impact things like solar radiation and gravity have on them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Kamo\u02bboalewa (also known as asteroid 2016 HO3) is the most well-known of Earth\u2019s quasi-moons, it is one of seven that are currently known to astronomers. Kamo\u02bboalewa\u2019s orbit is technically also around the Sun, rather than Earth, although its synchronized path keeps it locked closely to Earth\u2019s orbit, thereby justifying its recognition as a \u201cquasi-satellite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The object\u2019s size and distance make it an ideal target for studying NEOs, and China leaped at the opportunity with the CNSA\u2019s Tianwen-2 mission.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Approaching a Quasi-Moon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Tianwen-2 spacecraft is currently nearing 20 kilometers from the 130 to 330-foot space rock, according to a statement CNSA released on Monday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with a mission update, the CNSA also released new images, which are the first to officially document the object\u2019s appearance. According to current mission timelines, Tianwen-2 will remain in the vicinity of 469219 Kamo\u02bboalewa until next April, and by sometime in November 2027, its return capsule is expected to reach Earth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After its study of 469219 Kamo\u02bboalewa, Tianwen-2 will then make its way with the aid of a gravity assist in the direction of the comet 311P\/PANSTARRS, arriving in its vicinity by January 2035.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/jupiters-magnetic-tornadoes-are-creating-mysterious-dark-spots-like-a-reverse-aurora\/\" class=\"mask-img\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Jupiter-oval-haze-120x120.jpg\" class=\"attachment-codetipi-15zine-120-120 size-codetipi-15zine-120-120 wp-post-image lazyload\" alt=\"magnetic tornadoes\"  data- style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 120px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 120\/120;\"\/>\t\t\t<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGoing forward, the probe will gradually conduct more detailed scientific explorations to obtain information on the asteroid\u2019s shape, material composition, and internal structure,\u201d read the CNSA\u2019s statement on Monday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The agency said its ongoing collection of information will help to provide \u201csupport for preparations for sampling,\u201d and the spacecraft will spend the next several months conducting reconnaissance of the asteroid before its sample collection begins, which will combine high-speed maneuvers with the deployment of a specialized robotic arm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following their collection, the samples will be delivered to a recovery site in the Gobi Desert after dropping into Earth\u2019s atmosphere in November 2027.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Micah Hanks is the Editor-in-Chief and Co-Founder of The Debrief.
