{"id":1078649,"date":"2026-07-09T15:06:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T15:06:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1078649\/"},"modified":"2026-07-09T15:06:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T15:06:15","slug":"nearly-200-religious-leaders-in-london-not-paying-council-tax-new-data-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1078649\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearly 200 religious leaders in London not paying council tax, new data shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Nearly two hundred religious leaders city-wide don\u2019t pay council tax on the basis of their principle occupation being \u2018prayer\u2019, new data shows. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Croydon specifically sees the highest concentration of people on a \u201creligious community\u201d exemption by a significant margin, with 55 people in the borough not paying council tax.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is double the closest following boroughs, with Ealing and Lambeth both having 27 people on this exemption.<\/p>\n<p>Father Chad Boulton, from Ampleforth Abbey in York, said: \u201cPeople are always quite surprised to find monks, I think people think we\u2019re part of history books.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c1500 years ago, St. Benedict said monks must live by the work of their hands, so monks run schools, run hospitals, run farms, run tourist attractions \u2013 we provide an oasis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The exemption applies to members of a religious community whose principal occupation consists of: <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.royalgreenwich.gov.uk\/w\/religious-communities-council-tax-discount\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prayer, contemplation, education, or, \u2018the relief of suffering\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The services religious leaders provide to their community, such as emotional support and advice to those seeking wisdom, would qualify as the \u2018the relief of suffering\u2019. <\/p>\n<p>On top of this they must not have \u201cany capital\u201d of their own or receive income, and must be \u201cdependent upon the community for their material needs\u201d to qualify \u2013 as a result, most who qualify are monks based in London. <\/p>\n<p>The highest three boroughs all contain major catholic monasteries, with Croydon containing both a Catholic nunnery and a Catholic monastery \u2013 these are the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourladyoffidelity.org.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Monastery of Our Lady of Fidelity<\/a>\u2019 and \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/melbournecatholic.org\/news\/pilgrim-place-sacred-heart-croydon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sacred Heart Church\u2019<\/a> respectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite London containing monasteries and monks from many religions, such as a Buddhist monastery in Chiswick, exemption requests came almost exclusively from Christian denominations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Notable examples and exceptions include a single member of the Pentecostal denomination in Redbridge, an evangelical in Hounslow, and a single Ramgarhia Sikh in Greenwich.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Data has been gathered through FOI requests to London borough councils, however in some cases councils refused to provide information either on the basis that it would take too long to gather or is considered private information.<\/p>\n<p>However, in others, the information returned pertained to the amount of properties receiving an exemption on the basis of being a property \u201coccupied by members of religious communities\u201d \u2013 these have been outlined in red on the infographic pictured.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In this metric, Hammersmith &amp;
