{"id":1079,"date":"2025-04-02T03:35:15","date_gmt":"2025-04-02T03:35:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1079\/"},"modified":"2025-04-02T03:35:15","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T03:35:15","slug":"why-red-bull-cant-solve-its-second-f1-car-problem-with-a-simple-paint-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1079\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Red Bull can\u2019t solve its second F1 car problem with a simple paint job"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The saga surrounding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/yuki-tsunoda\/841444\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yuki Tsunoda<\/a>\u2019s promotion and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/liam-lawson\/841994\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liam Lawson<\/a>\u2019s demotion to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/team\/alphatauri-36471\/36471\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Racing Bulls<\/a> is thus: for years now, around and through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/max-verstappen\/829269\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Max Verstappen<\/a>\u2019s four world titles, Red Bull has been a one-car Formula 1 squad.<\/p>\n<p>Since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/daniel-ricciardo\/829602\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Ricciardo<\/a>\u2019s exit from the peak of his F1 career in 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/pierre-gasly\/840483\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pierre Gasly<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/alex-albon\/840486\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alex Albon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/sergio-perez\/829668\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sergio Perez<\/a> and now Lawson have tried and failed to cope with driving a car principally arranged to suit the uber-pointy front-end preference of Verstappen across the Red Bull garage. That\u2019s through two different design rules eras.<\/p>\n<p>Resplendent in one-off white, Tsunoda will start his attempt to avoid joining that list at this weekend\u2019s Japanese Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p>But, from the seriousness of Perez\u2019s inability to match Verstappen\u2019s points hauls in 2021 and 2024 costing Red Bull two constructors\u2019 championships, a wry observation from within the F1 paddock last time out at the Chinese GP hinted there might be a quick fix for Christian Horner\u2019s squad.<\/p>\n<p>Given Verstappen was suggesting in Shanghai that the Racing Bulls car is \u201ceasier to drive than ours\u201d, then why wouldn\u2019t a solution be to paint a VCARB 02 to run in the chosen colours of the second Red Bull?<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/liam-lawson-red-bull-racing-is.jpg\" alt=\"Liam Lawson, Red Bull Racing, Isack Hadjar, RB F1 Team\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Liam Lawson, Red Bull Racing, Isack Hadjar, RB F1 Team<\/p>\n<p class=\"photographer\">Photo by: Red Bull Content Pool<\/p>\n<p>The upsides for Red Bull would be clear.<\/p>\n<p>It could concentrate on fettling the RB21 to keep giving Verstappen the strong front end he wants, but reduce the confidence-sapping rear end snaps that even his prodigious talent can\u2019t tame when they randomly strike.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, whoever is deigned to be Verstappen\u2019s team-mate on any given weekend \u2013 he\u2019s about to have a third in just four grands prix, since Abu Dhabi last year \u2013\u00a0would get to drive the more compliant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/team\/alphatauri-36471\/36471\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Racing Bulls<\/a> package, with its slightly higher ride height usually making it easier to drive.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s even historic F1 examples of teams fielding very different car specifications\u00a0\u2013 from the low- and high-downforce Red Bull RB20 packages Perez and Verstappen were respectively running at last year\u2019s Hungarian GP, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/team\/mclaren\/36473\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McLaren<\/a> entering its regular M7A cars (arranged in three different specifications), as well as the one-off four-wheel drive M9A at the 1969 British GP.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, this being the relentlessly real modern world, Red Bull\u2019s F1 rivals would object to such a gambit as the championship has long moved on from this being allowed.<\/p>\n<p>They would have the legal basis to stop this plan in its tracks (which doesn\u2019t stop it being an intriguing discussion in a sphere as intricate and fascinating as motorsport).<\/p>\n<p>The main rule such an attempt would fall afoul of is Article 17.3 (and its many sub-categories) of F1\u2019s technical regulations, which covers \u201cListed Team Components\u201d (LTC). This limits teams to adding specific parts (including all aerodynamic surfaces) to their cars for in-competition use that they have designed themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Then there is also rule Article 17.5 on Transferable Components (TRC), which covers parts that teams can build and then sell to others.<\/p>\n<p>This is particularly pertinent to the Red Bull\/Racing Bulls situation given they share many mechanical parts \u2013 including suspension for both front and rear axles, plus gearboxes.<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/max-verstappen-red-bull-racing.jpg\" alt=\"Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing, Isack Hadjar, RB F1 Team\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing, Isack Hadjar, RB F1 Team<\/p>\n<p class=\"photographer\">Photo by: Red Bull Content Pool<\/p>\n<p>F1\u2019s technical rules also include Standard Supply Components (SSC) and Open Source Components (OSC) parts supply that cover specific (and generally not performance-influencing) elements of cars that are outsourced in production terms to suppliers. This can include other squads.<\/p>\n<p>Although such rules have been tweaked over the years \u2013 mainly around Haas\u2019s arrival as an F1 competitor using as many listed parts produced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/team\/ferrari\/36466\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ferrari<\/a> as permitted back in 2016 \u2013 Red Bull is actually the main reason why rules that ban customer cars exist in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Since late 2005, Red Bull has owned both its eponymous squad and its many-named junior team, which led to the complex outlawing of two teams running near-identical designs back in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>As a kicker, F1\u2019s rules (Article 17.2.4 and 17.2.6 of the 2025 technical regulations) even prohibit Red Bull transferring staff between its two squads to share any ideas.<\/p>\n<p>And Red Bull couldn\u2019t even use pictures, scans or video footage to replicate Racing Bull\u2019s compliant package for one car \u2013 it would have to use up its own resources conducting the research behind such designs.<\/p>\n<p>In the cost cap era, that\u2019s harder than ever and, really, a headache Red Bull could do without as it continues its self-set task of providing Verstappen with a car to suit his genius needs that doesn\u2019t destroy the chances of his team-mate.
