{"id":1079364,"date":"2026-07-09T23:03:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T23:03:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1079364\/"},"modified":"2026-07-09T23:03:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T23:03:14","slug":"review-the-guilty-at-donmar-warehouse-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1079364\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: The Guilty, at Donmar Warehouse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Russell Tovey on stage throughout the 60-minute drama [Helen Murray]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE GUILTY<\/strong><br \/><strong>Donmar Warehouse<\/strong><br \/><strong>3.5 stars<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A police officer\u2019s night shift proves a nail-biting drama in Chlo\u00eb Moss\u2019s version of The Guilty, based on the original 2018 Danish film Den Skyldige and the 2021 US remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal.<\/p>\n<p>Joe (Russell Tovey) is a control room operator, answering 999 calls and coordinating the response.<\/p>\n<p>Unfolding in real time over 60 minutes, the play reveals why Joe has been taken off his usual duties, ahead of a disciplinary hearing the following morning, and why his wife doesn\u2019t want him contacting their daughter.<\/p>\n<p>At first the calls he takes are routine \u2013 a traffic accident, a complaint about a party \u2013 but then he receives an alarming call from Emily, who claims to have been abducted by her partner, her two young children left at home alone. Joe goes into emergency mode and, as he tries to work out what is happening, we realise he\u2019s a man who does not always follow the rules and prefers to trust his instincts.<\/p>\n<p>His response to Emily\u2019s distress eventually forces him to confront the truth about himself and his own guilt.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s directed by Punchdrunk\u2019s Felix Barrett, working with his frequent collaborator sound designer Gareth Fry.
