World Food Programme warned<\/a> that 470,000 Gazans &#8220;are facing catastrophic hunger&#8221; because of Israel&#8217;s action to shut down aid flows since March 2. It said more than 116,000 metric tons of food aid was being blocked.<\/p>\n<p>Israel did not immediately respond to the leaders&#8217; statement, but has previously argued it needs new paths to funnel food aid to Gazans without the risk it will be seized and sold by Hamas militants. <\/p>\n<p>Israel has reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/ce82ene10p0o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">begun constructing new aid delivery centers<\/a> under its military control. <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/gidonsaar\/status\/1921584666189992389\" target=\"_blank\">Israel&#8217;s foreign minister, Gideon Sa&#8217;ar,<\/a> says this U.S.-backed approach will prevent the theft of future aid deliveries, declaring: &#8220;Hamas must not benefit from it anymore!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In Friday\u2019s statement, the seven European leaders \u2014 Kristr\u00fan Frostad\u00f3ttir of Iceland, Miche\u00e1l Martin of Ireland, Luc Frieden of Luxembourg, Robert Abela of Malta,  Jonas Gahr St\u00f8re of Norway, Robert Golob of Slovenia, and Pedro S\u00e1nchez of Spain \u2014 said Israel appeared increasingly determined to force Palestinians out of parts of the West Bank as well as Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>They cited \u201cincreased settler violence, the expansion of illegal settlements and intensified Israel military operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForced displacement or the expulsion of the Palestinian people, by any means, is unacceptable and would constitute a breach of international law,\u201d the leaders said. \u201cWe reject any such plans or attempts at demographic change. We must assume the responsibility to stop this devastation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Ireland, Norway and Spain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/ireland-other-european-countries-to-recognize-palestinian-statehood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unilaterally decided to recognize Palestinian statehood<\/a>. Israel responded, in part, by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/israel-shutting-embassy-ireland-palestine-gaza-relations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shutting its embassy in Dublin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/israel-norwegian-diplomat-palestine-diplomacy-may-war-icc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expelling Norwegian diplomats<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Earlier this week, the U.N.
