The Department of Homeland Security is considering a reality television show pitch from a Duck Dynasty producer that would focus on U.S. citizenship.<\/p>\n
The show, called The American, would put immigrants through a series of challenges as they compete for U.S. citizenship. It\u2019s being pitched by reality TV veteran Rob Worsoff (Duck Dynasty, The Millionaire Matchmaker), as he confirmed on his Facebook page on Friday. \u201cIt\u2019s not mean-spirited. Instead, \u2018The American\u2019 is a celebration of what it means to be\u2026 well\u2026 American \u2013 At a time when our morale is at an all-time low,\u201d Worsoff said.<\/p>\n
More from The Hollywood Reporter<\/strong><\/p>\n In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Department of Homeland Security assistant secretary for public affairs Tricia McLaughlin confirmed that the show was being reviewed.<\/p>\n \u201cThe\u00a0Department\u00a0of\u00a0Homeland\u00a0Security receives hundreds\u00a0of\u00a0television show pitches a year, ranging from documentaries surrounding ICE and CBP border operation to white collar investigations by HSI,\u201d McLaughlin said. \u201cEach proposal undergoes a thorough vetting process prior to denial or approval.\u201d<\/p>\n McLaughlin said The American was in the \u201cbeginning stages of that vetting process and has not received approval or denial by staff.\u201d<\/p>\n The Daily Mail<\/a> was the first to report the news. The Daily Mail reported that Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem was pushing the project, which McLaughlin, in her statement, denied.<\/p>\n In his Facebook post, Worsoff said he hadn\u2019t spoken to Noem yet but added that he has been working with some of her colleagues at the DHS. He also suggested that he had pitched the show during former President Barack Obama and President Joe Biden\u2019s administrations. \u201cIt was never a flat-out NO from any admin. It was always just about timing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Worsoff, an immigrant from Canada, also confirmed to the Wall Street Journal<\/a> that the program would be a competition show where citizens compete in stereotypically American activities like collecting gold from a mine in San Francisco or assembling a Model T in Detroit.<\/p>\n Under the Trump administration, the Department of Homeland Security has spent millions on television and radio commercials featuring Noem telling immigrants who are in the country illegally to \u201cleave now.\u201d<\/p>\n Worsoff emphasized in his Facebook post that he wanted his show to send a positive message. He stressed that, per his pitch, any backwards movement in the show\u2019s competition would not affect an immigrant\u2019s citizenship process in real life.
