{"id":1086304,"date":"2026-07-13T09:59:27","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T09:59:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1086304\/"},"modified":"2026-07-13T09:59:27","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T09:59:27","slug":"misunderstanding-over-environment-concerns-amid-major-housing-plan-for-nottinghamshire-golf-club","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1086304\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Misunderstanding\u2019 over environment concerns amid major housing plan for Nottinghamshire golf club"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The golf club was sold to developer Cilldara in November 2024<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Beeston Fields golf club and wedding venue in Beeston, Nottinghamshire\" loading=\"eager\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/7_J-9508.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Beeston Fields Golf Club and wedding venue in Beeston, Nottinghamshire, was sold by its founder's family in 2024\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Beeston Fields Golf Club and wedding venue in Beeston, Nottinghamshire, was sold by its founder&#8217;s family in 2024(Image: Beeston Fields golf club and wedding venue)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A council has sought to quash concerns over the potential environmental impacts of potential <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nottinghampost.com\/news\/local-news\/plans-hundreds-nottinghamshire-homes-century-11019057\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">development for hundreds of homes on a Nottinghamshire golf course<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Local residents in Broxtowe and the area\u2019s Member of Parliament have expressed their concerns online over the local council\u2019s decision to not require an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) on the proposed redevelopment of Beeston Fields Golf Course.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The aim of an EIA is to protect the environment, by assessing the potential impacts a development could have on the environment in an area, which a local authority will take into account when deciding whether to grant planning permission to a developer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">EIAs only apply to certain developments \u2013 ones that could have a \u2018significant\u2019 effect on the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Beeston Fields Golf Club and its attached wedding venue, which was founded in 1923, was sold to Warwickshire-based property developer Cilldara Group in November 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">While at the time reassurance was given to members the site would still run as it has been, Cilldara has since submitted its preliminary plans to <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nottinghampost.com\/all-about\/broxtowe-borough-council\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Broxtowe Borough Council<\/a> to build up to 500 houses, a 60-bed care home, a mobility hub, caf\u00e9 and park on the course. But the developer has not formally submitted the outline plans for the scheme yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The developer launched a consultation on the plans and Broxtowe Borough Council recently determined on its planning portal that a full EIA is not required for the plans on July 6.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The decision has been met with criticism online over the welfare of wildlife and biodiversity on the site and led to confusion over how, and if, environmental issues will be protected under future plans and whether residents get a say in this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Broxtowe\u2019s Labour MP, Juliet Campbell, posted on Facebook on July 7 that she \u2018shared\u2019 residents\u2019 concerns over the council not requiring an EIA and said she had written to the authority\u2019s chief executive over the decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">On Thursday (July 9), the council shared it\u2019s latest position on Facebook regarding the plans and concerns, saying there had been \u201csome misunderstanding\u201d online over it\u2019s EIA decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Its post read: \u201cDevelopments of this size naturally attract more views from residents and interested parties. Unfortunately, in this case, there has been some misunderstanding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe listing on our website refers to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and the associated screening processes, which we are legally required to undertake by law. During this process, the Council consults with various national bodies to determine if an EIA is necessary, before making a decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The authority clarified it has to publicise the EIA process on the website but that there is \u201cno requirement\u201d for a public consultation on the EIA decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">On its decision, the council said: \u201cWe have determined that a full EIA is not required.
