{"id":108819,"date":"2025-05-17T10:47:23","date_gmt":"2025-05-17T10:47:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/108819\/"},"modified":"2025-05-17T10:47:23","modified_gmt":"2025-05-17T10:47:23","slug":"early-adopters-of-apples-3500-vision-pro-headset-express-regret","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/108819\/","title":{"rendered":"Early adopters of Apple\u2019s $3,500 Vision Pro headset express regret"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/macdailynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/240201_tim_cook_vision_pro.png?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/240201_tim_cook_vision_pro.png\" alt=\"Apple CEO Tim Cook\" width=\"640\" height=\"343\" class=\"size-full wp-image-270525\"  \/><\/a>Apple CEO Tim Cook<\/p>\n<p>Early adopters of Apple\u2019s Vision Pro headsets, after a year with their costly devices, are left with a single outcome: regret.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/they-paid-3-500-for-apples-vision-pro-a-year-later-it-still-hurts-496de341\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joseph Pisani for The Wall Street Journal<\/a>:<br \/>\u200e<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\n\u201cIt\u2019s just collecting dust,\u201d Dustin Fox said about his mixed-reality headset, which looks like futuristic ski goggles. \u201cI think I\u2019ve probably used it four times in the last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The $3,500 device sits in a bin with other gadgets he no longer picks up\u2026 \u201cIt\u2019s way too heavy,\u201d Fox said about the device, which weighs just over a pound. \u201cI can\u2019t wear it for more than 20 or 30 minutes without it hurting my neck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tovia Goldstein was excited to wear his set to watch movies and TV shows. But he ended up needing breaks. \u201cAfter 60 minutes, you can\u2019t, you just have to throw it down,\u201d he said. He hasn\u2019t touched it in about four months.<\/p>\n<p>Weight isn\u2019t the only issue for the 24-year-old New Yorker. There also aren\u2019t enough apps to make the Vision Pro worthwhile, he said. <\/p>\n<p>Goldstein thinks from time to time about getting the headset out of the closet and dusting it off to see if any new apps have been added. But the pain in the neck he gets, plus the painfully long three minutes it takes to plug in the battery and wait for it to turn on, make him think again. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t recommend anyone buying it,\u201d he said, \u201cunless you\u2019re really rich and you don\u2019t know what to do with your money.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Fox thought about selling his own headset, but realized he could never get close to the $3,500 he paid. \u201cEvery time I see it in the bin,\u201d he said, \u201cI feel total regret.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u200e<br \/><strong>MacDailyNews Take: <\/strong>Another lovely article for Tim Cook\u2019s boondoggle.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/macdailynews.com\/2024\/03\/22\/the-apple-vision-pro-is-expensive-impractical-and-clearly-nowhere-near-ready-for-the-mass-market-benedict-evans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">we wrote back in March 2024<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nThere are a lot of people inside and outside of Apple who think the company should have waited on the Vision Pro, but it\u2019s fairly easy today to see why Tim Cook released this beta (alpha?) devkit: He likely knew last year, or had a strong inkling, that Project Titan [\u201cApple Car\u201d] was a goner and there wasn\u2019t much excitement in Apple\u2019s pipeline. He\u2019d need something to point to as \u201cinnovation\u201d while he continued on his seemingly unending quest to iterate and monetize products invented by Steve Jobs\u2019 Apple (a very different place) while continuing Apple\u2019s retail store buildout. He also needed something to energize developers and, who knows, they might come up with a killer visionOS app while Apple toils on the long road to real lightweight spatial computing glasses and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, Apple last year had already come to the sad realization that they\u2019d missed the generative artificial intelligence revolution and would need a distraction while they feverishly scrambled to catch up\u2026<\/p>\n<p>You have to feel for Cook. After a decade plus of being able to iterate and monetize Jobs\u2019 inspired products and services and continue adding retail stores around the world to spectacular effect, and being lauded for it, he now finds himself in a place that requires actual vision to be able to see which path to take. And he\u2019s not the guy. He had to have something to point to that would buy him some time. Even Apple\u2019s rubber-stamping board of lackeys would wake up and start asking questions otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>While Cook is hemming and hawing when faced with shareholders (virtually, of course, never again in person for as long as Cook remains), Apple is currently in scramble mode trying to catch up to rivals in generative AI, a technology the company seems to have completely missed while focusing instead on the not-ready-for-primetime Apple Vision Pro, visionOS, its now-canceled decade-long multi-billion-dollar electric vehicle boondoggle, replacing leather in iPhone cases and Apple Watch bands with overpriced junk in a quest to \u201csave the planet,\u201d forcing employees to endure a constant barrage of time-wasting zero-productivity DEI sessions, and myriad other various and sundry \u201cinitiatives\u201d which Cook deems of import. \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/macdailynews.com\/2024\/02\/28\/apple-to-disclose-ai-plans-later-this-year-ceo-cook-tells-shareholders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MacDailyNews, February 28, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When you lose your visionary CEO and replace him with a caretaker CEO, this is the type of aimless, late, bureaucratic dithering that ensues. \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/macdailynews.com\/2017\/11\/21\/why-apples-homepod-is-three-years-behind-amazons-echo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MacDailyNews, November 21, 2017<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Until it gets another visionary leader (fingers crossed; Apple\u2019s history has shown \u2013 cough, Sculley, Spindler, cough \u2013 that the next CEO could be far, far worse than the very competent caretaker Cook), Apple can afford to miss things like generative AI \u2013 which they clearly did \u2013 and then use its huge war chest to catch up \u2013 which they\u2019re doing right now (fun times and 80-hour weeks inside Apple Park!) \u2013 and, hopefully, surpass rivals (or at least be as good).
