{"id":1088343,"date":"2026-07-14T09:10:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T09:10:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1088343\/"},"modified":"2026-07-14T09:10:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T09:10:17","slug":"londoners-least-likely-in-uk-to-discuss-inheritance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1088343\/","title":{"rendered":"Londoners least likely in UK to discuss inheritance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>London leads the UK in avoiding discussions of inheritance, with new research showing around 44% of people in the capital have never discussed the topic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/mattioliwoods.com\/inheritance-remains-one-of-britains-biggest-taboos\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">research<\/a> \u2014 undertaken by YouGov for UK wealth management firm Mattioli Woods \u2014 also showed significant gaps in knowledge of basic inheritance tax (IHT) issues.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>For instance, only 15% are aware of the nil-rate band allowance \u2014 the amount of an individual\u2019s estate that can be passed on tax-free \u2014 and the residence nil-rate band allowance \u2014 a further tax-free allowance available when leaving one\u2019s main residence to direct descendants.<\/p>\n<p>Amit Joshi, managing director of Wealth at Mattioli Woods, said: \u201cThe reluctance to talk about inheritance is understandable, but it can leave families unprepared at a time when clarity matters most.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen these conversations are delayed, important financial and emotional decisions are often left until moments of stress or urgency, when it is harder to reflect clearly or act in a coordinated way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A quarter of over-55s and 35% of 45\u201354-year-olds also say they have never openly discussed inheritance with their family, with emotional discomfort, privacy concerns, and views that the discussion is \u2018too early\u2019 being cited as the main reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Only 35% understand that pensions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bdo.co.uk\/en-gb\/insights\/tax\/private-client\/inheritance-tax-on-pensions-planning-options-before-6-april-2027\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">will become subject<\/a> to Inheritance Tax from 6 April 2027\u2014a measure introduced in the Labour government\u2019s 2024 Budget to prevent pensions being used as a way of transferring wealth inheritance tax-free.<\/p>\n<p>Richard, 68 and from London, said: \u201cI\u2019ve spoken to my children about inheritance in detail. I want all of us to have at least some idea about these things from an early stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think a lot of people don\u2019t discuss this, partly because there is an embarrassment about wealth\u2014in London in particular.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he knew about key IHT concepts, he said he did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnowledge of inheritance issues is also partly a matter of background,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake someone who works in finance, for instance \u2014 they understand financial prudence because it\u2019s what they do for work every day. Or indeed people who work in the corporate sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA bricklayer, on the other hand, isn\u2019t likely to be well-versed in these issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jamie, 54 and from London, said: \u201cI haven\u2019t discussed inheritance or anything around it with my daughter. Not so much out of discomfort \u2014 I just think it\u2019s a bit too early to have those conversations.
