\n\tA brand-new 35mm print of \u00d4tomo Katsuhiro\u2019s \u201cAkira<\/a>\u201d \u2013 struck from the 4K master and the first of its kind to be created anywhere in the world in decades \u2013 will make its debut at BFI Southbank, London, from Aug. 14\u201319, distributor Anime Limited<\/a> has revealed. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe print will then tour selected cinemas across the U.K. and Ireland for the remainder of the year.<\/p>\n

\n\tSet in a neon-soaked future Tokyo, the film centers on Kaneda, the leader of a delinquent biker gang, and his friend Tetsuo, who becomes entangled in a covert government experiment after a late-night collision with a mysterious child. The British Film Institute has described the film as \u201ca vital cornerstone of the cyberpunk genre.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe print was produced in partnership with The Cinema Printing Company (CPC London) and ORWO Studios, and will screen in the film\u2019s original 1.85:1 aspect ratio with a stereo Japanese-language soundtrack and English subtitles.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s something special about film going through a projector and there\u2019s something special about \u2018Akira,’\u201d said Robbie Duncan, technical manager at Anime Limited. \u201cI can\u2019t wait for audiences to experience both and get a hint of what it was like to see back in 1988. I can\u2019t thank our partners at The Cinema Printing Company (CPC London) and ORWO Studios enough for their expertise and going the extra mile to make \u2018Akira\u2019 look as good as it can.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe announcement follows a record-breaking theatrical re-release that saw the 1988 cyberpunk classic \u2013 which first brought anime to mainstream U.K. and Irish audiences in 1991 \u2013 earn more than \u00a31 million ($1.3 million) at the U.K. and Ireland box office after an Imax run earlier this year, setting a new high-water mark for classic anime releases in the territory.<\/p>\n
