It has said it wants three new coal-fired power plants built, to embrace nuclear power, ban offshore wind farms, to withdraw Australia from the Paris Agreement, and to abolish the Department of Climate Change.<\/p>\n
Hanson pledges to end multiculturalism<\/a><\/p>\n An activist group has claimed credit for a banner that interrupted an address by Pauline Hanson, in which she laid out a vision for an end to multiculturalism.<\/p>\n It wants to withdraw Australia from the UN Refugee Convention, cap visas at 130,000 a year to slash immigration, and deport more than 70,000 people estimated to be living in Australia unlawfully<\/a>.<\/p>\n Those are the party’s well-known policies.<\/p>\n But in recent weeks, after Hanson’s press club speech<\/a>, some of the party’s other policies have started to receive much more scrutiny.<\/p>\n Last week Liberal leader Angus Taylor made his strongest condemnation of One Nation to date, complaining that a One Nation government would lead to “an eternity of pain<\/a>“.<\/p>\n “Their top four financial commitments alone could cost the budget in the order of a trillion dollars over a decade,” he argued.<\/p>\n The four One Nation policies included in his modelling were One Nation’s plan to increase defence spending to 3.5 per cent of GDP, introduce income splitting for families, index income tax brackets to inflation, and pursue zero net migration.<\/p>\n This week, the AFR reported<\/a> that some economists had also criticised One Nation’s plan to offer Australians 30-year fixed-rate mortgages at 5 per cent interest through Australia Post, to be funded by abolishing the federal government’s $11.5 billion Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF).<\/p>\n Taylor rubbishes plan<\/a><\/p>\n In his strongest remarks pushing back on One Nation, the opposition leader has accused the right-wing party of being a “column of smoke”.<\/p>\n Challenger chief economist Jonathan Kearns (a former senior RBA official) questioned if the policy had accounted for potential taxpayer losses during housing downturns.<\/p>\n “It’s an exceptionally risky policy, and you’d be transferring all of that risk onto the government’s balance sheet, and not just for borrowers that you’ve deemed to be needy, but for all borrowers,” he told the AFR.<\/p>\n Pauline Hanson quickly rejected the economists’ warnings that that plan could cost hundreds of billions of dollars, saying it would be capped at $11.5 billion because it would simply be reallocating the money assigned to Labor’s housing fund.<\/p>\n Barnaby Joyce has ideas for the Reserve Bank<\/p>\n But it is also difficult keeping tabs on all of One Nation policies, given the frequency with which the party’s representatives speak to the media (and where it isn’t always clear what they’re saying).<\/p>\n Supply shock warning<\/a><\/p>\n Sarah Hunter says global supply shocks appear to be occurring more frequently and the RBA will try to adjust to the new reality.<\/p>\n This week, One Nation’s treasury spokesman Barnaby Joyce declined to guarantee that all of One Nation’s policies would be independently costed before the 2028 federal election.<\/p>\n He also told Nine-Fairfax papers<\/a> that the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) should start providing advice to the federal government about what level of spending it should pursue, and which regulations it could cut, to lower inflation.<\/p>\n And then he had this to say:<\/p>\n “The bank must clearly state: ‘This is the target money the government should be putting into the economy, and no more.’\u00a0<\/p>\n “The Reserve Bank should be giving a critique \u2014 if not a target, at least a commentary \u2014 about where the government should be on the release of funds.\u00a0<\/p>\n “Surely, there is a role there for the Reserve Bank to say, ‘Well, I’ve got two choices: I can put up interest rates [or] give a directive to the government, whether it takes it up or not, to reduce regulation and spending.'”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n What is Joyce talking about there? What is the “target money”? Is he talking about a money supply target?\u00a0<\/p>\n If Joyce is suggesting that the RBA should return to targeting the rate of growth of the money supply, then sorry \u2014 that ship has sailed.<\/p>\n Is the Reserve Bank to blame for this inflation?<\/a><\/p>\n The Reserve Bank says it’s too simplistic to say that its money printing caused this inflation, writes Gareth Hutchens.<\/p>\n Under the influence of Milton Friedman<\/a>, the Fraser coalition government and RBA already experimented with a money supply target in Australia (from 1977 to 1985) and the success of the policy was debatable<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n They had hoped that<\/a>, by maintaining low and steady growth in the money supply to accommodate normal economic growth and low inflation, it would keep inflation under control.<\/p>\n But the experiment was abandoned in 1985 after the Hawke Labor government floated the exchange rate in 1983 and deregulated the financial system (which allowed private banks to issue far more credit). Other countries ended their own experiments<\/a> around the same time.<\/p>\n How does Joyce expect money supply targets to work in 2026, in a globalised world of free-flowing capital and proliferating cryptocurrencies?<\/p>\n Rinehart plan for northern Australia?<\/p>\n Which brings us to Gina Rinehart.<\/p>\n The mining billionaire, Australia’s richest person, is a major supporter of Pauline Hanson and One Nation.\u00a0<\/p>\n Gina Rinehart is a friend and adviser, One Nation’s Hanson says <\/a><\/p>\n One Nation leader Pauline Hanson speaks of her “respect” for billionaire Gina Rinehart as the senator visits Perth amid surging popularity.<\/p>\n Hanson says she takes policy advice from Rinehart.<\/p>\n “My policy on pensioners being able to work unlimited hours and without losing their pension or health care card came from Mrs Rinehart. And I think that’s great. I listen to anyone who brings good policy to me,” she said last month.<\/p>\n It will be worth watching closely for Rinehart’s influence on One Nation’s policies.<\/p>\n Rinehart has floated the idea of carving out parts of Australian territory to give to foreigners and other entities.<\/p>\n North Queensland reacts to Rinehart’s island idea<\/a><\/p>\n The Townsville Enterprise chief executive says “all ideas are welcome” after mining magnate Gina Rinehart suggested islands off North Queensland’s coast should be offered to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk for satellite launches.<\/p>\n When she spoke at the National Bush Summit in Townsville last month (a News Corp event sponsored by her company, Hancock Prospecting), she said the Queensland government could give some free land to “the Israelis” to turn Townsville into a base for Israeli companies to develop their military weapons systems.<\/p>\n “[We could] encourage the Israelis to develop and build their advanced war drones and\/or other advances in defence and improve upon their Israeli-style domes,” she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n She said Queensland could also give free land to Elon Musk (the world’s first trillionaire) for his SpaceX satellite construction and launches.<\/p>\n A ‘Northern Economic Zone’ for Australia<\/p>\n But one of her biggest policy ideas is to turn the top half of the Australian continent into a “special economic zone”.<\/p>\n In 2010, Rinehart helped to create the Australians for Northern Development & Economic Vision (ANDEV) think tank to promote the idea, along with Ron Manners<\/a> from the Mannkal Foundation (a long-time affiliate of the Atlas Network<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n See the map below which shows ANDEV’s vision<\/a> for Australia:<\/p>\n (Supplied: Australians for Northern Development & Economic Vision)<\/p>\n ANDEV says the “Northern Economic Zone” should have significant tax advantages to attract investment. It says dam construction within the zone should be encouraged to capture the north’s annual rainfall for agricultural purposes.<\/p>\n It says Australia should adopt special migration agreements where a condition of the visa is that a foreign worker must live and work within the economic zone.<\/p>\n Between 2010 and 2013, ANDEV worked with the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA), a neoliberal think tank (another affiliate of the Atlas Network), to push the idea<\/a> into Australia’s public debate.<\/p>\n Rudd plan ‘pie in the sky’<\/a><\/p>\n The NT Government doubts Kevin Rudd’s plan to cut company tax in the Territory will ever happen.<\/p>\n By 2013, Labor prime minister Kevin Rudd and then-opposition leader Tony Abbott were both promising<\/a> to pursue the idea of creating special tax incentives for Australia’s north, although the concept lost momentum after the 2013 election.<\/p>\n But the idea definitely hasn’t died.\u00a0<\/p>\n The IPA is still promoting it<\/a>. ANDEV co-chair Imants Kins is still promoting it<\/a>. And so is Rinehart. Last week<\/a>, she said there should be no personal income tax, no payroll tax, no licence fees, and no stamp duty inside the special economic zone.\u00a0<\/p>\n Her massive mining and agricultural interests in the northern half of Australia would presumably be among those to benefit from the tax advantages.<\/p>\n Earlier this year, Hanson was gifted a plane by a Rinehart company, as well as $2 million in donations from the billionaire’s friends and business colleagues (stockbroker Angus Aitken and his wife Sarah, Adam Giles and the geologist Ian Pilmer).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n
