{"id":109021,"date":"2025-05-17T12:36:23","date_gmt":"2025-05-17T12:36:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/109021\/"},"modified":"2025-05-17T12:36:23","modified_gmt":"2025-05-17T12:36:23","slug":"i-tried-the-historic-bristol-pub-with-four-pints-for-10-karaoke-and-a-resident-ghost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/109021\/","title":{"rendered":"I tried the historic Bristol pub with four pints for \u00a310, karaoke and a resident ghost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It dates from the 18th-century<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_The-Crown-bristol-1.jpg\" alt=\"Inside The Crown in St Nicholas Market\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>The new owner refurbished the entire building<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Crown in the heart of St Nicholas Market dates back to 1741 and was once an inn frequented by merchants, dock workers and, one imagines, quite a few pirates and salty sea dogs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Back then, the main trading area of this Grade II-listed 18th-century <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/pubs-and-bars-in-bristol\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">pub <\/a>would have been in the vaulted cellars, a space that over time has been used as a live music venue and club.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">These subterranean cellars are also said to be haunted by a ghost of a 17th-century man wearing a periwig.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Apparently, the bewigged gent has only ever been seen by women &#8211; although I have to say I did spot a few chaps sporting short and curly mullet haircuts in the bar on the night I visited, so who knows?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Crown was taken over by Marc Griffiths in 2021 when <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/pubs-and-bars-in-bristol\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">pub <\/a>company Mitchells &amp; Butlers decided to get rid of it during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Griffiths also runs The Mothers Ruin around the corner on St Nicholas Street and has recently<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/whats-on\/food-drink\/revamped-1960s-bristol-pub-feels-9203113\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> taken over The Colosseum in Redcliffe<\/a> as part of his company, World Famous Dive Bars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Prior to Griffiths taking over The Crown, the pub had long enjoyed a reputation for its heavy metal music and screens showing sport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The new owner refurbished the entire building, from the roof down, adding new floors, lighting and bar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">One of the few city pubs with a licence that allows it to open into the early hours at weekends, The Crown attracts a young crowd of drinkers in the evening, as well as a steady daytime trade from visitors and workers around St Nicholas Market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">On a Tuesday evening, there\u2019s a quiz with a \u2018huge\u2019 jackpot and Sunday night is the well-supported \u2018Crowneoke\u2019 karaoke sessions.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_The-Crown-bristol-2.jpg\" alt=\"The Crown in St Nicholas Market\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The Crown in St Nicholas Market<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Like sister pub The Colosseum, the pub runs some incredible drinks deals during the daily happy hour from 4pm-8pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This includes Holsten Lager and Thatchers Gold for \u00a33 per pint &#8211; or four for \u00a310, which must make it one of the cheapest pints in Bristol, especially as one nearby pub has recently been selling a certain beer for an eye-watering \u00a37.80 a pint.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">There are also cocktail deals &#8211;
