Earlier this week, we covered a story about someone in Brazil who had taken Microsoft to court over a hacked Xbox account<\/a> in which they’d lost access to all their games and been told that they were essentially unrecoverable.<\/p>\n

That situation was fortunately resolved in the end, but then almost immediately afterwards, a post on social media from someone named Joshua Khane started getting massive attention (literally 4.7 million views at the time of writing) in which they complained of the same thing – their account had been hacked, and they’d lost all their games and files.<\/p>\n

You can see the post below, but be warned that it contains a lot of profanity:<\/p>\n

Microsoft DELETED my account AND OneDrive!!?? After ACKNOWLEDGING that I\u2019m the owner of the account and that it was compromised??? <\/p>\n

25 fucking years of data, thousands of euros spended on games?? My son\u2019s baby pictures? GONE!<\/p>\n

This ended up getting picked up a bunch of outlets in the media, even including the likes of IGN<\/a> and Windows Central<\/a>. It seems the attention was so significant that Xbox Support was finally alerted to what was going on.<\/p>\n

In an official response<\/a>, Xbox stated that it was “not the experience we want anyone to have” with a hacked account:<\/p>\n

“We\u2019re sorry this happened, it\u2019s not the experience we want anyone to have when their account is compromised. We have been working to restore access to your purchases and reached out with the next steps. Please check your voicemail or inbox.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

All’s well that ends well, then? Eh… maybe. The problem here is that we’ve seen this happen a few too many times for our liking \u2014 across Xbox and other platforms for that matter \u2014 and it’s getting more and more concerning when these reports crop up. There are plenty of success stories if you look for them where people have been able to get their accounts back, but then there are others like these where it feels like people are running into a brick wall without going to social media and asking for additional help.<\/p>\n

Here’s hoping that both Xbox Support and Microsoft Support will be learning from this situation for the future, as all of us obviously want to be reassured that our accounts will be safe should the worst happen.<\/p>\n

For what it’s worth, we’re going to reshare the Reddit post that we came across earlier this week from someone who was able to recover their account, so if you do ever find yourself in that boat, hopefully it’ll come in useful for you.<\/p>\n
