BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC<\/a>) – A former Birmingham police officer has been charged with first-degree sexual assault.<\/p>\n

The Birmingham Police Department says Darrion Lapsley, 26, of Birmingham was arrested on July 16 by the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team.<\/p>\n

The department says the alleged incident happened July 12 in the 800 block of 3rd Avenue West while he was an employee of the Birmingham Police Department.<\/p>\n

Lapsley will be taken to the Jefferson County Jail. He began his employment with the department in 2025 and is now a former employee.<\/p>\n

Chief Michael Pickett released the following statement:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Birmingham Police Department has arrested a former Birmingham Police officer following a criminal investigation. This serves as a clear reminder that no one is above the law. <\/p>\n

The actions of one individual do not define the hundreds of honorable officers who serve this community with integrity, professionalism, and dedication every day.<\/p>\n

The Birmingham Police Department said it is committed to thoroughly investigating allegations of misconduct and holding individuals accountable regardless of their position or profession.<\/p>\n
