Such a move would disproportionally affect winemaking countries including France, which exported \u20ac15.4 billion worth of wine and spirits last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fevs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/20250211-cp-fevs-bilan-2024-export-vins-spiritueux-anglais-vf.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the Federation of French Wine and Spirits Exporters (FEVS)<\/a>, most of which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fevs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240213-dp-fevs-bilan-2023-export-vins-spiritueux-vf.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">went to the United States. <\/a><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>France is the EU\u2019s top exporter of wine and spirits, and the sector is particular influential in French politics and society.<\/p>\n<p>With one of its most valuable exports now in the White House\u2019s crosshairs, French leaders  appear to be getting cold feet on the whole unity thing. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/france-prime-minister-eu-tariffs-us-trade-war-american-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prime Minster Fran\u00e7ois Bayrou and his government<\/a> are instead publicly urging Brussels to spare Kentucky bourbon from any possible European response.<\/p>\n<p>After Trump imposed global steel and aluminum tariffs last week, the European Union threatened to retaliate by hitting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/on-the-eus-tariff-hit-list-american-chicken-wings-motorbikes-and-womens-negliges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a list of iconic American exports<\/a> in return \u2014 including Kentucky bourbon. Bayrou said over the weekend putting bourbon on the list was a mistake and France is now pushing to reconsider what is on its retaliatory list.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe asked them [the European Commission] 50 times not to hit bourbon,\u201d said a French minister who was granted anonymity to speak freely about sensitive negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>Sign of weakness<\/p>\n<p>Jean-Luc Demarty, who was in charge of drafting the European Commission\u2019s tariff retaliation list in 2018, during Trump\u2019s first term, said it was &#8220;a mistake&#8221; to publicly try to dial back on Brussels\u2019 strategy, as it will be seen in Washington as \u201ca sign of weakness.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"U.S. President Donald Trump upped the ante last week by threatening 200 percent tariffs on European alcohol.
