{"id":1097497,"date":"2026-07-18T20:36:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-18T20:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1097497\/"},"modified":"2026-07-18T20:36:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-18T20:36:15","slug":"basking-shark-spotted-off-coast-of-lizard-point","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1097497\/","title":{"rendered":"Basking shark spotted off coast of Lizard Point"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The remarkable creature was captured on video by a stunned holidaymakerSuspected basking shark spotted at Lizard Point &#8211; credit: Clare Miller<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A huge shark has been spotted swimming off the coast of Cornwall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The suspected basking shark was seen off the <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cornwalllive.com\/all-about\/lizard\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Lizard<\/a> Point on Wednesday afternoon (July 15) by stunned holidaymaker Clare Miller.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She estimated the shark to be around five to seven metres long and captured the remarkable creature on video &#8211; which you can watch above &#8211; as it swam near the surface of the water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Speaking about how she felt when she saw the shark, Clare told <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cornwalllive.com\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">CornwallLive<\/a>: &#8220;I was unsure at first but felt overjoyed once I realised I had found something special.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Clare, who is from Market Harborough in Leicestershire, is on a week-long tour of the coast of Cornwall with her boyfriend Nick.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She said she spent 15 minutes tracking the shark on video as she watched on in awe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">According to the Cornwall Wildlife Trust, the basking shark is the second largest fish in our oceans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">However, despite their size, basking sharks only feed on zooplankton and pose no risk to humans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Back in May, <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cornwalllive.com\/news\/cornwall-news\/gallery\/massive-amazing-shark-spotted-cornwall-10975985\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">CornwallLive reported that a basking shark was spotted<\/a> and filmed by skipper, Kieren Faisey checking out <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cornwalllive.com\/all-about\/newlyn\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Newlyn<\/a> Harbour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The creature was videoed cruising just below the surface in the clear blue waters.
