Scouse rapper Mazza L20 appears to have breached strict rules by filming himself inside court. The rapper, real name Malcolm Graham, appeared at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Friday in connection with driving offences.<\/p>\n
But Bootle<\/a>-born Graham, 29, took to his official Instagram account to update fans with videos filmed from inside the courtroom. Filming inside a judicial building is a criminal offence<\/a> and can be treated as contempt of court<\/a> punishable by an unlimited fine up to two years’ imprisonment.<\/p>\n A spokesperson for HM Courts and Tribunals Service said: “We are aware of alleged unauthorised filming at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court and are investigating.”<\/p>\n Apart from in very limited circumstances, such as if the media have been given permission to broadcast a judge’s sentencing comments in a high-profile case, it is a criminal offence to take photos or videos anywhere inside a court building.<\/p>\n Legislation issued more than 100 years ago by Parliament banned the use of cameras in court because it was believed photos and videos would put added strain on witnesses, defendants and jurors. The importance of the strict ban is also recognised to protect the integrity of court proceedings.<\/p>\n In certain circumstances, taking illegal photographs or videos can also amount to contempt of court, the government has said. This is when the offence is so serious that prosecutors believe it is in the public interest to start contempt proceedings.<\/p>\n All court buildings will have signs displayed in public areas warning people about phone use. Ushers will also tell defendants and their supporters to turn off their phones when they enter the courtroom.<\/p>\n The ECHO has seen two videos of Graham inside the courtroom. One filmed from Graham’s point of view appears to show him sitting in the dock and filming the backs of a number of lawyers. Court does not appear to be in session with the magistrates’ bench empty.<\/p>\n The second video shows Graham filming himself while sitting in the dock. The short video is accompanied by text which confirms where he is, saying: “In court if you don’t hear from me, send me noodles.”<\/p>\n Graham was in court charged with driving without a licence and driving without insurance. He was fined \u00a3440 and had eight points recorded on his virtual driving record.<\/p>\n Merseyside Police<\/a> had told the ECHO that Graham was charged following an incident on Ellis Ashton Street in Huyton<\/a>. Following his arrest he was held in HMP Liverpool<\/a> after being recalled to prison for breaching his licence conditions having served a sentence for a firearms offence.<\/p>\n Graham was sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2016 after detectives discovered footage on his iPhone of him test firing a pistol later used to murder teenager Kevin Wilson<\/a>.<\/p>\n
