centre with the right wing group able to access Victoria Square despite being refused access<img decoding=\"async\" centre of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Birmingham<\/a> despite the city council refusing access to a main square and a counter protest nearby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Supporters of the right wing political party gathered at the junction of Hill Street and Navigation Street at midday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">They then marched toward New Street Station, along Lower Temple Street, and back along New Street, with counter protesters seen close by.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The protestors marched into <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/victoria-square\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Victoria Square<\/a> where a stage and video screen had been set up, despite <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/birmingham-city-council\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Birmingham City Council<\/a> saying the protestors would not be welcome and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/news\/midlands-news\/birmingham-britain-first-rally-breaking-31645273\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">would not be allowed address their audience on the upper level, counter protestors held their own rally on the lower level nearer New Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">There was a heavy police presence and the two groups were largely kept apart save for shouting at each other.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Read more: <a class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Birmingham City Council has refused to give vehicle access for Victoria Square to Britain First.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But despite the refusal, the group had set up a stage and screen and were able to hold their rally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">City council leader, Cllr John Cotton said: \u201cWe\u2019re investigating how Britain First accessed Victoria Square today as this is a serious breach of security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong inbox<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The rally was wound up at around 2.30pm when the Britain First Group marched back to Hill Street where they dispersed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It appeared to pass off without much incident. Earlier a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/west-midlands-police\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">West Midlands Police<\/a> spokesman said: \u201cWe have a long history of upholding the right to protest, while balancing it with the rights of others, to keep the public safe and prevent crime and disorder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Following the protest a spokesman for the force added: \u201cThe planned demonstration and counter demonstration in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/birmingham-city-centre\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Birmingham city centre<\/a> passed without significant incident. There were no arrests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Birmingham Race Impact Group, a collaborative of people and organisations across the city united against racism posted a powerful message on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Member Mukhtar Dar issued a stark reminder that racism and racial hatred are never gone &#8211; &#8216;it lingers in shadows&#8230;and returns wearing new faces.&#8217; <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wearebrig.co.uk\/news\/545yni1v8y9i0oaz8txaxb63c4i35z\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"His full message can be read here.Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">His full message can be read here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He says of today&#8217;s (Saturday&#8217;s) planned march through Birmingham by Britain First, a proclaimed far right organisation with a history of hate, that it is &#8216;not merely a demonstration&#8230;it is an attempt to defile a city built on resistance, dignity and defiant pluralism.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He says of our city: &#8220;Birmingham is not just diverse; it is defiantly so.
