KING Charles has ordered a British-made \u00a3160,000 electric Lotus car.<\/strong><\/p>\n

His move will spark speculation that he will ditch the state Bentleys<\/a> if the company cannot provide plug-in versions.<\/p>\n

Charles intends to use his Royal Claret Lotus Eletre as a personal runaround on one of his country estates<\/p>\n

Charles<\/a> intends to use his top-spec Lotus Eletre<\/a> \u2014 painted in traditional Royal Claret \u2014 as a personal runaround on one of his country estates.<\/p>\n

It is thought that using the colour, which adorns the Royal Family\u2019s<\/a> official fleet of state cars, was the idea of the late Queen Mother<\/a>.<\/p>\n

An insider said: \u201cThe King has always liked eco-friendly vehicles but seems conscious that royal claret is the right look even when off-duty.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will look far more professional for the King\u2019s personal car to match the state vehicles.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Palace has hinted that if Bentley can\u2019t make limousines for official use run on electric, then they would look at other manufacturers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact Lotus can produce an electric SUV in royal claret really puts them in the driving seat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Royal Family had a Lotus Eletre last year on loan and it clearly ticked some boxes.\u201d <\/p>\n

The King \u2014 increasingly spotted at his homes at Balmoral<\/a>, Sandringham<\/a>, and Highgrove<\/a> \u2014 has most recently been using a \u00a3100,000 eco-friendly Audi Q8<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 164mph Lotus<\/a> is made in Hethel, Norfolk<\/a> \u2014 just a few miles from Sandringham and its home since 1966. <\/p>\n

Lotus<\/a> is 51 per cent owned by Chinese company Geely.<\/p>\n

In last summer\u2019s annual review Sir Michael Stevens, Keeper of the Privy Purse, said: \u201cThe two existing state Bentleys will undergo refurbishment in the coming year to enable them to run on biofuel.<\/p>\n
