{"id":11030,"date":"2025-04-11T15:06:16","date_gmt":"2025-04-11T15:06:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/11030\/"},"modified":"2025-04-11T15:06:16","modified_gmt":"2025-04-11T15:06:16","slug":"nasa-astronaut-orbiting-at-17500mph-captures-earth-surprise-and-viewers-cant-believe-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/11030\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA astronaut orbiting at 17,500mph captures Earth &#8216;surprise&#8217; and viewers can&#8217;t believe it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the greatest advancements in modern technology is that, not only can we send people to space, but those in space can share videos for us Earthlings to see.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ladbible.com\/nasa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:NASA;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">NASA<\/a> astronaut Don Pettit captured footage while orbiting our planet on the International <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ladbible.com\/space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Space;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Space<\/a> Station (ISS).<\/p>\n<p>The video showed his view of the Earth before docking in the Soyuz spacecraft, which brought an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ladbible.com\/us-news\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:American;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">American<\/a> and two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ladbible.com\/russia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Russian;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Russian<\/a> astronauts to the ISS.<\/p>\n<p>Footage posted by Pettit on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ladbible.com\/instagram\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Instagram;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Instagram<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ladbible.com\/twitter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Twitter;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Twitter<\/a> shows the altitude change of the station, with the astronaut promising a \u2018surprise\u2019 halfway through the video.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote in the caption: &#8220;Changes in attitude durning changes in latitude for @iss in preparation for yesterday\u2019s Soyuz docking. A bit long but keep watching for the surprise in the middle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"Don Pettit is NASA\u2019s oldest active astronaut (Bill Ingalls\/NASA via Getty Images)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/871dcefe5d9f5c40eda0e4f948fdcbe6.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Don Pettit is NASA\u2019s oldest active astronaut (Bill Ingalls\/NASA via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018surprise\u2019 in question is beautiful footage from above of green Auroras, effectively showing the Northern Lights from above.<\/p>\n<p>Pettit also shared in his post that the Soyuz docking led to the space station rotating 180 degrees and flying backwards at 17,500mph, the speed of the International Space Station&#8217;s docking.<\/p>\n<p>The Soyuz spacecraft launched from Kazakhstan yesterday (8 April), taking American astronaut Jonny Kim to the ISS alongside Russian cosmonaut\u2019s Sergei Ryzhikov and Alexei Zubritsky.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"Pettit posted footage of the Northern Lights from above (Instagram\/@astro_pettit)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/c845bda6feae4bbbab84ff714635dcc0.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Pettit posted footage of the Northern Lights from above (Instagram\/@astro_pettit)<\/p>\n<p>The trio head to the ISS to carry out 50 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ladbible.com\/science\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:scientific;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">scientific<\/a> research missions, per Al Jazeera, in an eight month mission.<\/p>\n<p>Ryzhikov, Zubritsky, and Kim are set to return to Earth in December.<\/p>\n<p>In docking the Soyuz aircraft they joined the ISS with, Pettit was able to get the unique footage of the aurora\u2019s from above.<\/p>\n<p>One person commented on the footage on Instagram on Pettit\u2019s post, saying: \u201cSir you should make a documentary with all the video footage that you compiled, I would love to watch this on a big screen. This is phenomenal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another comment said: \u201cDon, this is legitimately my favourite timelapse you\u2019ve done so far &#8211; insane views.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A third responded on Twitter to Pettit\u2019s post, writing: \u201cNot long, worth watching every second, loved the surprise at the end.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re gonna miss your photos and videos from the ISS.
