\n\tAvengers, to the (box office) rescue! \u201cAvengers: Doomsday<\/a>\u201d has generated $16.5 million in advance ticket sales after the first day of availability. <\/p>\n

\n\tDisney\u2019s Marvel Studios put tickets on sale tied to the launch of the first official trailer<\/a>, which teased an epic battle as the Avengers and X-Men face off against the villainous Doctor Doom. Those pre-sales are impressive because tickets were only available for premium formats in just 1,000 domestic theaters. When \u201cAvengers: Doomsday\u201d opens the weekend of Dec. 18, the Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure will land on more than 4,000 North American screens. Showtimes for premium formats on Thursday, Dec. 17 and Friday, Dec. 18 are already largely sold out, according to studio insiders, and exhibitors are reportedly adding more screenings for Christmas Day and beyond.<\/p>\n

\n\tFirst-day sales are also notable because they don\u2019t include Imax, the most ubiquitous of the premium large formats. \u201cAvengers: Doomsday\u201d won\u2019t have access to Imax because \u201cDune: Part III,\u201d which debuts on the same day, has the entire Imax footprint exclusively for three weeks. (That\u2019s because director Denis Villeneuve shot the third \u201cDune\u201d with the company\u2019s cameras.) Since premium large formats have been all the rage, especially with action-heavy adventures, Marvel introduced something called \u201cInfinity Vision.\u201d It\u2019s not a new technology but rather a \u201ccertification\u201d that guarantees movie theaters will \u201cmeet rigorous technical standards,\u201d per\u00a0Disney.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDoomsday\u201d is predicted to have one of the biggest (if not the biggest) debuts of the year. Although advance ticket sales don\u2019t necessarily translate to opening weekend results, \u201cDoomsday\u201d pre-sales are twice as high as the first-day figures for Marvel\u2019s prior superhero mashup, 2024\u2019s \u201cDeadpool & Wolverine\u201d \u2014 and that included all formats and screens on sale. \u201cDeadpool & Wolverine\u201d launched to $211 million and ended its run with $1.3 billion to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s unclear how big a debut \u201cDoomsday\u201d will enjoy around the holidays. The last time the entire MCU assembled was 2019\u2019s \u201cAvengers: Endgame,\u201d which resulted in the largest opening weekend of all time with $357 million domestically and $1.2 billion globally.\u00a0It\u2019s currently the second-highest grossing movie of all time with $2.7 billion. Since then, Marvel\u2019s track record has been rocky<\/a> \u2014 to say the least. But the comic book empire\u2019s biggest post-pandemic hits were major \u201cAvengers\u201d-esque reunions such as 2021\u2019s \u201cSpider-Man: No Way Home\u201d ($1.9 billion) and \u201cDeadpool & Wolverine.\u201d Marvel is about to deliver another behemoth, \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day,\u201d on July 31.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDunesday,\u201d the portmanteau for the same-day debuts of \u201cAvengers: Doomsday\u201d and \u201cDune 3,\u201d should result in one of the biggest collective weekends in box office history. The three biggest weekends to date were timed to the releases of 2019\u2019s \u201cAvengers: Endgame\u201d ($402 million collectively), 2018\u2019s \u201cAvengers: Infinity War\u201d ($314 million collectively) and 2015\u2019s \u201cStar Wars: The Force Awakens\u201d ($313 million collectively).<\/p>\n

\n\tDirected by Joe and Anthony Russo, \u201cAvengers: Doomsday\u201d is the 39th installment in the sprawling Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie features a kitchen sink of Avengers and X-Men, including but not limited to Robert Downey Jr. (returning not as Iron Man but as Doctor Doom), Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Patrick Stewart, Pedro Pascal, Ian McKellen, Letitia Wright and Channing Tatum.
