He has also revealed the &#8216;silent&#8217; everyday habits that could be quietly weakening your <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/blood-pressure\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">heart<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Private cardiologist consultant <a aria-label=\"Dr Francesco Lo MonacoLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/drlomonacocardiologist.co.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Dr Francesco Lo Monaco<\/a> says millions of people unknowingly put extra strain on their hearts every single day through seemingly harmless habits. From uncontrolled blood pressure and untreated sleep apnoea to carrying excess weight, <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/cardiologist-new-research-shows-hot-37456527\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">drinking too much<\/a> alcohol and spending long periods inactive, several common <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/cardiologist-lists-four-foods-cut-37447690\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">lifestyle factors<\/a> can force the heart to work harder over time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In some people, that can eventually contribute to weakening of the heart &#8211; a condition known medically as cardiomyopathy. Dr Francesco Lo Monaco said an enlarged heart can also develop gradually and may not cause obvious symptoms until it has become more advanced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He said: \u201cMany people assume they would know if something was wrong with their heart, but that\u2019s often not the case. If left untreated, this can contribute to enlargement and weakening of the heart and eventually increase the risk of heart failure, abnormal heart rhythms and other cardiovascular complications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The health expert says this is one of the reasons high blood pressure is often described as a \u201csilent killer\u201d. Many people have no symptoms until damage has already begun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The NHS says: &#8220;High blood pressure significantly increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes \u2013 often described as a \u2018silent killer\u2019 as there are usually no symptoms, which makes it hard to spot. It is estimated that around 4.1 million people in England are living with it without realising.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Warning signs people shouldn\u2019t ignore<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Although many people have no symptoms, Dr Lo Monaco says anyone experiencing five warning signs should seek medical assessment as soon as possible. He says these include:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"NumberedList_numbered-list__oytz_\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"ordered-list\">\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">breathlessness<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">swollen ankles<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">chest pain<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">palpitations<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">unexplained fatigue<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe encouraging news is that many of these risk factors are modifiable,\u201d he said. \u201cKeeping your blood pressure under control, treating sleep apnoea, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly and limiting alcohol can all reduce the strain placed on the heart over time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Woman suffering from chest pain holding hand over heart\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/0_GettyImages-2204702423.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"There are certain warning signs people should watch out for, like palpitations (stock image)\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">There are certain warning signs people should watch out for, like palpitations (stock image)<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Five everyday habits that put extra strain on your heart<\/strong><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Poorly controlled blood pressure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe single biggest modifiable risk factor we see is high blood pressure,\u201d Dr Lo Monaco said. \u201cMany people feel perfectly well, so they don\u2019t realise the damage can be happening silently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Untreated sleep apnoea<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Repeated drops in oxygen overnight increase stress on the cardiovascular system. \u201cSleep apnoea doesn\u2019t just cause tiredness,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is strongly associated with high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms and structural changes within the heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Excess alcohol<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Heavy drinking over long periods can weaken the heart muscle. \u201cAlcohol-related heart disease often develops gradually, so people may not notice any symptoms until significant damage has occurred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Obesity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Carrying excess weight increases the amount of work the heart has to perform every day.
