Atlanta United are reportedly interested in signing former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan was sold to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal <\/a>during a busy summer transfer window last year, one in which the Reds earned<\/a> more than \u00a3250million for players deemed surplus to requirements<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The sale of Nunez helped fund a record \u00a3455m spending spree<\/a>, as Liverpool brought in high-profile signings Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Giovanni Leoni, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong. Reds fans were eager for Nunez to thrive on Merseyside, and the striker penned an emotional goodbye <\/a>after learning he was on the way out.<\/p>\n

Nearly \u00a380m was spent on the Benfica star when considering add-ons, but for many, he remains a cherished figure at Anfield<\/a>. The attacker has scored nine goals in 24 appearances for Al-Hilal so far.<\/p>\n

However, the 27-year-old looks set to leave Saudi Arabia this summer after being left out of Al-Hilal’s squad when the team signed Karim Benzema. Saudi clubs can only register eight foreign players, and Nunez was dropped from the roster when Benzema arrived.<\/p>\n

And The Athletic<\/a> claim that talks with Major League Soccer side Atlanta have begun but are not yet advanced. It is said that the MLS club have the financial power to make such ambitious deals happen.<\/p>\n

However, the report adds that Atlanta does not currently have a designated player roster spot open. That could be changing soon, as an exit is reportedly nearing for club-record signing Emmanuel Latte Lath.<\/p>\n

Atletico Madrid defender Alex Grimaldo has previously admitted<\/a> he does not understand criticism of Nunez\u2019s time at Liverpool<\/a>. The forward concluded his Anfield<\/a> stint with 40 goals across his 143 appearances in all competitions.<\/p>\n

Grimaldo, who played with Nunez at Benfica, shared his belief that the Uruguay international should have been perfect for English football’s top-flight.<\/p>\n
