Anyone who has ever tried to play heavy metal music is only standing in the halls that Black Sabbath built. As Brian May put it, \u2018\u2019Tony Iommi<\/a> is the real father of heavy metal, a constantly evolving genius, a master of riffs and one of the greatest people in the world!\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n Interestingly, Sabbath would be the first to tell you that they were nothing more than a hard rock band, but listening to any Tony Iommi riff for more than two seconds will tell you that they were the blueprint for anyone trying to make something a bit heavier than what most thought. Iommi may have gone down like a metal warlord every single time he played live, but even he had to admit defeat when his contemporaries were playing something he couldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n That\u2019s before getting into the fact that he was already at a disadvantage. Anyone who loses the tips of two of their fingers would normally kiss their days of playing goodbye, but Iommi\u2019s decision to use thimbles to play the guitar was the whole reason why his style got heavier, usually easing up the tension on the strings to give him that dark tone.<\/p>\n But even if Sabbath was the blueprint for metal, they were far from the first to come up with the idea. \u2018Paranoid\u2019 may as well have been them aping the same bluesy grit that Led Zeppelin did in their prime, and even if someone wanted something technical, they could probably find something better out of Ritchie Blackmore twisting the guitar inside out with Deep Purple.\u00a0<\/p>\n Iommi did have his fans, and one California transplant named Eddie Van Halen couldn\u2019t get enough of Black Sabbath in his early years. Despite Sabbath eventually taking the band out on tour, Van Halen was already taking the crux of their idols and beefing them up a bit more, almost like they were making the world\u2019s greatest party music that happened to feature a guitar tone developed in hell.<\/p>\n In his rival guitarists, Eddie Van Halen appreciated invention above all else. As the frontrunner of the hammer-on technique, coming up with something fresh is what the fuzzy-haired rocker prided himself on, but he was only taking a leaf out of Iommi\u2019s book. <\/p>\n \u201cWithout Tony heavy metal wouldn\u2019t exist,\u201d the \u2018Jump\u2019 rocker once said. \u201cHe is the creator of heavy! Tony is a legend. He took rock and roll and turned it into heavy metal.\u201d The admiration flowed both ways.<\/p>\n Further reading: From The Vault<\/strong><\/p>\n Any band might normally appreciate people like Eddie for carrying on his tradition, but Iommi was almost intimidated at first. He may have got on with the young guitarist fine, but Eddie\u2019s knowledge of Sabbath\u2019s best albums bested Iommi\u2019s in some respects, usually being able to rattle off every song off of Ma<\/a>s<\/a>ter of Reality<\/a> without breaking a sweat and recreating \u2018Into the Void\u2019 perfectly.<\/p>\n Even though Iommi had a tremendous amount of respect for Eddie learning his licks, he knew that he was playing a losing game trying to get anywhere close to Van Halen\u2019s technique, saying<\/a>, \u201c[Eddie] said, \u2018I\u2019ve been playing [\u2018Into the Void\u2019] like this all these years. And, of course, I showed him how to play it. I didn\u2019t ask him how he played any of his. Because I wouldn\u2019t be able to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n Granted, asking how Eddie played any of his licks would probably be enough for a college-level course for any guitarist. Even if someone has all the dexterity under their belts, it\u2019s almost impossible trying to get the strange tapping technique that he created on \u2018Mean Street\u2019 or the DJ scratching noise that he came up with to create \u2018Atomic Punk\u2019.<\/p>\n Iommi\u2019s mate, Brian May, was floored by him too. \u201cHe\u2019s incredible,\u201d the Queen guitarist said of EVH. \u201cLike Jimi Hendrix, he took the guitar to a new place, he gave it an extra dimension and millions of people have followed him. He was a wonderful guy to be around, too.\u201d<\/p>\n But even if Iommi could never best Eddie on guitar in any respect, that didn\u2019t really matter. Each of them had carved out their own personality beyond anything that their contemporaries could have imagined, and even if they went in different directions, songs like \u2018Into the Void\u2019 were forever a part of Eddie\u2019s musical DNA.<\/p>\n If Iommi was the master of spirit, then it seems he thought Eddie Van Halen was the master of skills.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n![\"Eddie](\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Eddie-Van-Halen-Van-Halen-Guitarist-1984-Far-Out-Magazine-1024x768.jpg\")
