{"id":110859,"date":"2025-05-18T05:04:16","date_gmt":"2025-05-18T05:04:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/110859\/"},"modified":"2025-05-18T05:04:16","modified_gmt":"2025-05-18T05:04:16","slug":"nasa-picks-rocket-lab-to-launch-shoebox-sized-aspera-space-telescope-in-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/110859\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA picks Rocket Lab to launch shoebox-sized Aspera space telescope in 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NASA has selected Rocket Lab to launch its Aspera smallsat mission, which will study gases in the vast regions of space between galaxies.<\/p>\n<p>Rocket Lab&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/electron-rocket.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/electron-rocket.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Electron<\/a> will launch Aspera, a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34324-cubesats.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34324-cubesats.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cubesat<\/a> being developed by the University of Arizona and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA<\/a>. The shoebox-sized satellite will use an onboard telescope to study the ultraviolet light emitted from gases adrift between galaxies.<\/p>\n<p>The launch is targeted for the first quarter of 2026, from Rocket Lab&#8217;s Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand. The selection of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rocket Lab<\/a> is part of NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-awards-launch-service-task-order-for-asperas-galaxy-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-awards-launch-service-task-order-for-asperas-galaxy-mission\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">$300 million<\/a> Venture-Class Acquisition of Dedicated and Rideshare (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/vadr-venture-class-acquisition-of-dedicated-and-rideshare-launch-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/vadr-venture-class-acquisition-of-dedicated-and-rideshare-launch-services\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">VADR<\/a>) launch services contract, and adds to a growing list of science missions which with agency has entrusted the launch company, including <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab-prefire-and-ice-climate-change-mission-launch\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab-prefire-and-ice-climate-change-mission-launch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PREFIRE<\/a>, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab-nasa-tropics-hurricane-cubesat-launch\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab-nasa-tropics-hurricane-cubesat-launch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TROPICS<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/capstone-cubesat-450-days-moon-orbit-gateway\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/capstone-cubesat-450-days-moon-orbit-gateway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CAPSTONE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a long-trusted launch partner for NASA\u2019s most pioneering small satellites, it\u2019s great to be able to continue that support for another innovative science mission like Aspera,&#8221; Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck said <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rocketlabusa.com\/updates\/rocket-lab-to-launch-nasa-astrophysics-science-mission-on-electron-to-study-galaxy-evolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.rocketlabusa.com\/updates\/rocket-lab-to-launch-nasa-astrophysics-science-mission-on-electron-to-study-galaxy-evolution\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Aspera will measure the inflow and outflow of gases between galaxies, called the circumgalactic medium, which scientists believe may contribute to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">star<\/a> formation and galaxy evolution. The mission is part of NASA&#8217;s Pioneers Program, in the space agency&#8217;s Astrophysics Division, which provides funding to lower-cost astrophysics missions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have a good understanding of how much gas there must be in galaxies to explain how many stars we see, but we&#8217;ve searched far and wide and still cannot find most of it,&#8221; Aspera Principal Investigator Carlos Vargas said in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/news.arizona.edu\/news\/u-led-nasa-aspera-mission-hits-spacecraft-milestone\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/news.arizona.edu\/news\/u-led-nasa-aspera-mission-hits-spacecraft-milestone\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">February update<\/a> from the University of Arizona about the mission&#8217;s manufacturing process.<\/p>\n<p>Rocket Lab has also been contracted to launch a mission with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) using <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/us-military-taps-rocket-labs-new-neutron-launcher-for-point-to-point-cargo-test-flight-in-2026\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/us-military-taps-rocket-labs-new-neutron-launcher-for-point-to-point-cargo-test-flight-in-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neutron<\/a>, the partially reusable new rocket the company is developing. That mission will loft a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging satellite for the company iQPS called QPS-SAR-10 (nicknamed \u201cWADATSUMI-I\u201d for the Japanese god of the sea).
