{"id":1108991,"date":"2026-07-24T18:10:31","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T18:10:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1108991\/"},"modified":"2026-07-24T18:10:31","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T18:10:31","slug":"donald-trump-threatens-fresh-tariffs-on-eu-in-retaliation-for-e890m-google-fine-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1108991\/","title":{"rendered":"Donald Trump threatens fresh tariffs on EU in retaliation for \u20ac890m Google fine \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a> threatened new tariffs on products from the European Union in retaliation to the bloc\u2019s $1 billion (\u20ac890 million) fine of Google earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Trump in a social media post said the US would launch a trade investigation \u201cinto the practice of \u2018ROBBING\u2019 American Companies and, in turn, the American Taxpayer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe penalties will be entirely reversed and, we anticipate, a substantial TARIFF to be placed on them at the earliest possible moment,\u201d Trump posted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Trump has frequently made tariff threats against the US\u2019s largest trading partners, and has followed through on some of them while retreating from others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The European Commission on Thursday fined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/google\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/google\/\" target=\"_blank\">Google<\/a> a total of \u20ac890 million for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/07\/23\/eu-fines-google-890m-in-test-of-donald-trumps-threats-to-protect-big-tech\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/07\/23\/eu-fines-google-890m-in-test-of-donald-trumps-threats-to-protect-big-tech\/\">breaching the bloc\u2019s digital rule book<\/a>, saying Google gave preferential treatment to its own services, including shopping, hotel, transport and sports results, over those of third parties in its search engine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-commission\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-commission\/\">European Commission<\/a> had said earlier on Friday a new 10 per cent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/us-tariffs\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/us-tariffs\/\">tariff<\/a> rate the United States will levy on trade coming from the European Union will be \u201call-inclusive\u201d, meaning businesses will pay a lower rate than they were charged previously under a deal signed last year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The US has announced tariffs of between 10 per and 12.5 per cent will apply to 80 countries, in the latest twist in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\"> US President Donald Trump\u2019s chaotic trade policy<\/a>, in effect replacing a stopgap blanket tariff that had been due to expire shortly. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The US administration has been searching for increasingly legally creative ways to reinstate Trump\u2019s sweeping tariff agenda, following a US supreme court decision striking down the basis he had used to justify his \u201cLiberation Day\u201d duties imposed on most of the globe at the start of his second term. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Several months ago US trade envoy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jamieson-greer\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jamieson-greer\/\">Jamieson Greer<\/a> signalled plans to prop up a new set of tariffs on EU states and scores of other countries. At the time the administration planned to justify the new duties by turning to the 1930 Tariff Act, which bans the import of goods produced by \u201cforced or indentured\u201d labour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, the levies announced late on Thursday were based on a separate piece of legislation, section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which is intended to penalise countries that engage in forced labour, on the basis it gave their businesses an unfair edge. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">EU states, Mexico, India, Canada and the UK will now be subject to a 10 per cent tariff, while other countries will face a 12.5 per cent tariff when businesses sell into the US market. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/07\/24\/trump-imposes-sweeping-round-of-fresh-tariffs-on-more-than-80-countries\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump imposes sweeping round of fresh tariffs on more than 80 countriesOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Trump has charged steep tariffs, which are taxes on imports, on nearly all of America\u2019s trading partners, in an attempt to gain leverage over governments and force overseas production back to American soil. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Washington and Brussels had struck a deal last summer to cap tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on exports coming from European countries at 15 per cent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The agreement was seen as a necessary evil at the time by European governments, to avoid risking a destabilising transatlantic trade war. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1784803479672-9ae96ac7-c636-4bcb-998c-c0aedcc60931.jpeg\"\/>Aer Lingus job cuts and Ryanair\u2019s profits plunge &#8211; what is happening in the Irish aviation sector?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The European Commission, the EU\u2019s powerful executive that negotiated that tariff deal, said the new 10 per cent rate announced by the Trump administration this week was an \u201call-inclusive tariff\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe EU notes positively the fact that this outcome is in line with the US tariff commitments agreed under the EU-US joint statement,\u201d the commission\u2019s trade spokesman Olof Gill said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Another commission official said the changes meant the EU exports would \u201cbenefit\u201d from tariffs at the same rate, or lower, compared to the duties that applied last year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/07\/24\/key-questions-about-trumps-new-tariffs-on-more-than-80-countries\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Key facts about Trump\u2019s new tariffs on more than 80 countriesOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, the Brussels-based administration \u201cdid not agree\u201d with the premise underpinning the new levies, given the EU had passed strict regulations to prevent forced or slave labour, a commission spokeswoman said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Helen McEntee said the Government would undertake \u201ca detailed review\u201d of the legal notice issued by the US setting out its new tariff regime. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThese new tariffs confirm that the US will apply a 10 per cent all-inclusive tariff on EU goods exported to the US and are in line with the commitments under the Turnberry agreement, which includes an all-inclusive ceiling of 15 per cent,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">McEntee said the EU would separately push to expand a list of products exempt from US tariffs, which at present includes aircraft and plane parts, cork and generic medicines. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Government has been keen to secure a carve out to shield whiskey and spirits from the hiked up import taxes, a demand shared by the French and Italian governments keen to protect wine growers and exporters.
