A PSNI officer suffered an eye injury after being assaulted in Londonderry.<\/p>\n

A 35-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the incident on Friday evening.<\/p>\n

A senior PSNI officer said it was the latest example of \u201cshameful\u201d attacks on frontline emergency workers.<\/p>\n

Chief Inspector Cherith Craig said: \u201cOfficers were attending an incident in the Sackville Street area on Friday evening, during which two men were arrested on suspicion of assault.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring this arrest, a female officer was pulled into the side of the vehicle by one of the detained men, hitting her face off the door. This caused a painful swelling of her eye.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe man was further arrested on suspicion of assault on police and remains in custody at this time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is simply not acceptable. Officers join the police service to keep people safe – they do not deserve to be assaulted simply for doing their job.<\/p>\n

“These incidents highlight the grim reality of the shameful behaviour which we run the risk of being confronted with every time we attend a call.<\/p>\n

“Our local officers put themselves in harm\u2019s way to protect others.
