{"id":1110059,"date":"2026-07-25T07:13:31","date_gmt":"2026-07-25T07:13:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1110059\/"},"modified":"2026-07-25T07:13:31","modified_gmt":"2026-07-25T07:13:31","slug":"trump-threatens-eu-tariffs-over-u-s-tech-giant-fines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1110059\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump threatens EU tariffs over U.S. tech giant fines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/108339964-17849146851784914682-47363395843-1080pnbcnews.jpg\" alt=\"Trump: U.S. will begin trade investigation in response to EU fines against U.S. tech companies\"\/><\/p>\n<p>President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a> on Friday said his administration will launch a trade probe into the European Union that will cancel hefty fines levied against U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/46192192\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tech giants<\/a> and likely result in a &#8220;substantial&#8221; tariff on the 27-member bloc.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, in a lengthy <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116976043318889040\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Truth Social post<\/a>, accused the EU of &#8220;&#8216;ROBBING&#8217; American Companies and, in turn, the American Taxpayer&#8221; as he raged over its recent<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/23\/google-1-billion-eu-fine-dma.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> $1 billion fine<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/GOOGL\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Google<\/a> for allegedly giving search priority to its own services.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The European Union is at it again and, as usual, taking direct aim at GREAT American Companies!&#8221; Trump wrote in the post, which also railed against prior European fines against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AAPL\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apple<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/META\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Meta<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AMZN\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Trump claimed the latest penalty against Google was issued &#8220;without explanation.&#8221; But the European Commission, the EU&#8217;s executive branch, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_26_1670\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">press release<\/a> Wednesday that the fines totaling 890 million euros were due to Google&#8217;s alleged noncompliance with the bloc&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/03\/07\/what-the-eu-digital-markets-act-means-for-us-tech-giants-like-apple.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Digital Markets Act<\/a>,\u00a0which aims to scrutinize Big Tech&#8217;s practices.<\/p>\n<p>Trump claimed the EU&#8217;s behavior is &#8220;not going to continue during the Trump Administration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The United States of America is not a &#8216;PIGGYBANK&#8217; for Europe, nor will we allow it to be!&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Trump said the U.S. will &#8220;immediately&#8221; start an investigation under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which permits the imposition of tariffs in response to practices that are found to unfairly burden U.S. commerce.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has launched multiple probes using that tariff authority.
