Not true, finance minister says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/canada?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">Canada<\/a>\u2019s finance minister said the government kept 25 per cent retaliatory tariffs on tens of billions of dollars in US goods, disputing a report from a research firm that suggested it had paused the vast majority of those levies.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Francois-Philippe Champagne said 70 per cent of the counter-tariffs implemented by Canada in March were still in place, according to a social media post on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The government \u201ctemporarily and publicly paused tariffs\u201d on some items for health and public safety reasons, he said.<\/p>\n<p>That 70 per cent figure implies that Canada continues to charge tariffs on about C$42 billion (US$30 billion) of <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/united-states?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">US<\/a> exports to Canada, excluding cars.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney after his swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday.
