data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Philippines<\/a> signals the bloc\u2019s aim to diversify its Indo-Pacific strategy beyond trade into the security arena.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Such a move shows Brussels is seeking a larger role in a region where maritime disputes and challenges to the rules-based order could damage its extensive interests, according to analysts.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Philippine Foreign Secretary <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/maria-theresa-lazaro?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Maria Theresa Lazaro<\/a> and Kaja Kallas, the EU\u2019s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy and vice-president of the European Commission, signed a joint statement on the enhanced partnership on the sidelines of the Asean foreign ministers\u2019 meeting in Pasay City.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The Philippines will receive a \u20ac15 million (US$17 million) help package under the European Peace Facility to strengthen its maritime domain awareness, particularly surveillance and monitoring.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cThis is the first ever European Peace Facility support to be implemented in the Indo-Pacific and the clear demonstration that Europe is stepping up as a security partner in the region,\u201d Kallas said.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Manuel Enverga III, Jean Monnet Chair of European Studies and director of the European Studies programme at the Ateneo de Manila University, said the Philippines was a \u201ctest case\u201d for the EU to expand the scope of its Indo-Pacific strategy from \u201ca connectivity agenda into a genuinely geopolitical
