{"id":111928,"date":"2025-05-18T14:42:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-18T14:42:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/111928\/"},"modified":"2025-05-18T14:42:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-18T14:42:10","slug":"france-to-build-supermax-prison-in-jungle-of-south-american-territory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/111928\/","title":{"rendered":"France to build supermax prison in jungle of South American territory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">France is to build a high-security prison in the South American jungle for the most \u201cdangerous\u201d criminals, including drug kingpins, hardline Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin said in remarks published on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The facility will open in 2028 in Saint Laurent du Maroni in French Guiana, a French overseas territory situated north of Brazil, Darmanin told the JDD weekly.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cI have decided to establish France\u2019s third high-security prison in Guiana,\u201d said Darmanin, who forged his tough-on-drugs reputation in his previous job as interior minister.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cSixty places, an extremely strict prison regime and one goal \u2013 to remove the most dangerous profiles involved in drug trafficking,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Justice ministry officials added that 15 places would be reserved for convicted Islamist radicals.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cMy strategy is simple \u2013 hit organised crime at all levels,\u201d Darmanin told the weekly during a trip to Guiana.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"France\u2019s President Emmanuel Macron (centre) and France\u2019s Justice minister Gerald Darmanin (centre-left) visit the Vendin-le-Vieil prison, in northern France on Wednesday.
