Everyone had a good understanding of what it meant to get their heart broken, and a lot of Seger’s songs knew that truth maybe a little too well.

Some of the biggest pieces of his catalogue are indebted to the kind of blue-collar rock and roll that everyone loved from his childhood, but there was always that bit of soul coming through in everything that he sang. You have to remember that this guy came from Detroit, and some of the best songs that he had ever heard usually came from the kind of people who had a lot more on their mind than singing about partying all night.

The biggest names in Motown were used to churning out hits quicker than just about anybody, but there were also more than a few people trying their hand at telling stories. Bob Dylan had laid the groundwork for people like Seger, but it took the next generation of people like James Taylor and Cat Stevens for him to realise that there was a lot of money to be made in people telling a story with a guitar in their hands.

And while Seger was a lot more cut and dry about many of his songs, he knew that he hadn’t hit on the right idea until he made a song like ‘Night Moves’. The entire album is a snapshot of what any adolescent romance was like back in the 1970s, but given the kind of music that Seger was listening to, he felt that a song like Kris Kristofferson’s ‘Me and Bobby McGee’ was the perfect tune that he was looking for.

Because whether you’re listening to Kristofferson singing it or Janis Joplin doing her own rendition of it, you can hear Kristofferson’s soul in every single line. There are countless people who have had to deal with relationships that vanished into thin air before their eyes, and when Seger first heard the tune, he felt that he had the perfect backdrop for what he wanted his own record to sound like.

He was telling wistful stories about love gone bad, and Kristofferson seemed to know that idea like the back of his hand when he wrote his masterpiece, saying, “I got the idea for narrative songwriting from Kris Kristofferson. A key song for me was ‘Me And Bobby McGee’. You could just tell that he’d lived that. I listened to that song over and over, and decided I wanted to write a song like that, a song that I’d lived.”

Further reading: From The Vault

When you listen to Night Moves, you can definitely hear the bones of the Kristofferson song poking through as well. There aren’t many people who can be able to capture the excitement and the heartache that comes with reminiscing on those early days of romance, and when you hear Seger singing the tune, you can practically hear a little tear in his voice the same way that his idols did whenever they talked about the scars they had put on their hearts every single time they made their classics.

It’s never easy to go back to tunes like this, but that’s what makes them resonate so well over the years. Too many people have tried to play it safe whenever they make their songs, but the only way that someone will relate to one of your songs is if they hear someone who has a real voice talking about their problems.

ADD AS A PREFERRED SOURCE ON GOOGLE

Credit: Far Out / American Talent International / Capitol Records / Public Domain Fri 31 July 2026 3:00,…

[3936
91533,230811,266048,77,305421,247708,269,16,15
post-1121314","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-music","tag-1970s","tag-230811","tag-bob-seger","tag-entertainment","tag-heartland-rock","tag-kris-kristofferson","tag-music","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom
["GET
