Sheffield United<\/a> and Coventry City<\/a> are close to agreeing a deal for the permanent transfer of midfielder Gustavo Hamer.<\/p>\n

Sheffield United<\/a> star Gustavo Hamer is in the last year of his contract at Bramall Lane. SUFC have spoken with the Dutchman over the possibility of a new deal<\/a>, but there has been an expectation that he will be sold if a new agreement can\u2019t be struck.<\/p>\n

It emerged earlier this week that Hamer\u2019s former club Coventry City had held talks over a potential reunion<\/a>. Now, a new update form Sky Sports<\/a> reveals that a deal between the Sky Blues and the Blades is close.<\/p>\n

Hamer left the CBS Arena to join<\/a> United in the Premier League in 2023. Now, as Frank Lampard\u2019s side prepare for their top flight rise, it seems they are poised to welcome their former star back.<\/p>\n

Why now is the time for Gustavo Hamer to leave Sheffield United<\/a> as Coventry City<\/a> return beckons<\/p>\n

When Hamer joined Sheffield United<\/a> for their 2023\/24 Premier League campaign, it was a richly deserved step up. The Dutchman had starred in the Championship and was ready for the rise to the top flight.<\/p>\n

He fared well despite the Blades\u2019 struggles too, managing four goals and seven assists in 34 games. As such, many expected him to be back in England\u2019s premier division sooner rather that later, but he has instead spent two more years playing in the Championship with SUFC.<\/p>\n

Rumours of a move abroad have not come to fruition and it brings us to the present day, where Hamer is in the last year of his deal. The Blades can not afford to let such a valuable asset run down his contract, making a sale essential.<\/p>\n

United recoup some value, and Hamer gets the jump back up he has arguably deserved for the last two years. He will be a loss for Chris Wilder<\/a> and the Championship, but it is a sensible move for all parties.<\/p>\n

The Verdict: Sheffield United<\/a> must replace output lost in Hamer sale<\/p>\n

Although selling Hamer is the right move, it leaves Sheffield United<\/a> with a big challenge. They simply have to fill the gap left behind, and there is a lot of attacking output that has to come from elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Hamer managed seven goals and 13 assists in 39 games last term. He is SUFC\u2019s clear standout creatively, and he has cropped up with some excellent goals over the years as well.<\/p>\n

Wilder has to find a player \u2013 or players \u2013 that can emulate the output of goals and assists he provided. Hamer\u2019s character on and off the pitch will be a big miss too, so those already on the books have to pick up the mantle.<\/p>\n

If not replaced appropriately, Sheffield United<\/a> could be in for a challenging season. Hamer has been a clear standout in recent years and his absence will be felt if not addressed.<\/p>\n
