Parking restrictions could soon be introduced on a number of roads near a Birmingham<\/a> hospital amid safety concerns.<\/p>\n The city council wants to introduce a resident permit scheme on certain roads near the University of Birmingham<\/a> and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital<\/a> site as parking woes continue to blight the area.<\/p>\n In online consultations launched this week, the council said that recent expansions at the university and hospital site means more people are now travelling to the area.<\/p>\n READ MORE:<\/strong> Fury over proposed charges at key Birmingham parks as MP says users are \u2018paying the price’<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n It continued that together with new homes and an increase in car ownership, there are now \u201csignificant pressures\u201d on parking in local streets.<\/p>\n According to the council, the impact of this is a \u201cnegative impact\u201d on access for deliveries, buses and waste vehicles, and on the safety of all road users.<\/p>\n \u201cMany properties do not have private off-street parking and so there are increasing demands on the limited supply of public on-street parking spaces,\u201d the consultation page read.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are therefore proposing measures that prioritise parking provision for local residents in local streets and improve access and safety of local roads.\u201d<\/p>\n The roads included in the consultations are:<\/p>\n \u201cOn streets where people live, we are proposing a resident permit scheme which will operate between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday,\u201d the council said. \u201cDuring these times, only vehicles displaying a resident parking permit (or resident\u2019s visitor permit) would be allowed to park there.<\/p>\n \u201cOnly local residents will be able to apply for permits.\u201d<\/p>\n On who is eligible for a permit, the council said: \u201cIf you live or trade within one of the streets proposed for permit parking, you will be eligible to purchase a permit and you will be permitted to park anywhere within the scheme area, as shown on the plan.\u201d<\/p>\n It added that current parking charges are \u00a321.60 for the year for the first resident permit and an annual cost of \u00a341.20 for the second resident permit.<\/p>\n Meanwhile the business permit is \u00a3153.50 for the year – though prices are reviewed annually and are subject to change.<\/p>\n\n
