{"id":1122803,"date":"2026-07-31T20:43:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T20:43:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1122803\/"},"modified":"2026-07-31T20:43:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T20:43:17","slug":"space-dogs-the-other-palace-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1122803\/","title":{"rendered":"Space Dogs \u2013 The Other Palace, London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Writers:<\/strong><strong> Nick Blaemire and Van Hughes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Director: <\/strong><strong>Will Blum <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Four years after lift-off at Manhattan\u2019s MCC Theater \u2013 extended twice, filmed for streaming \u2013 Van Hughes and Nick Blaemire\u2019s rock-musical docu-comedy finally touches down in London, live guitars and keyboards, teddy-bear puppets to hand, and a refrain repeated like a mission countdown: \u201cthe war behind closed doors\u201d. 40-odd dogs paid the fare, and Space Dogs is their daft, heartfelt requiem.<\/p>\n<p>The pair plays politicians, scientists, an entire pack of cosmonaut strays, switching sides beneath two wall-mounted flags lit to show whose propaganda we\u2019re inside. Blaemire\u2019s Wernher von Braun, the Nazi rocketeer spirited into American employment after the war, earns the night\u2019s biggest laugh with a German techno number in gurgling autotune, one arm instinctively rising toward a heil that the other must ground.<\/p>\n<p>Hughes\u2019s Chief Designer \u2013 Sergei Korolev, the Soviets\u2019 secret genius \u2013 is a granite-faced hard-nut when the American flag glows, and, under the Soviet one, a camp, cuddly moralist, doting on his doomed pack: \u201cWe bred them, committed eugenics to make them this way. The least we could do is feed them well.\u201d A torch to the face and an echo on the voice conjure his gulag years on The Other Palace Studio\u2019s stage with as much spare room as Sputnik, and still get laughs. The dogs, meanwhile, hold a beauty pageant to crown the most propagandisable stray \u2013 \u00a0Laika, inevitably \u2013 while a cigar-chewing wiseguy mutt assures her, with entirely unearned authority, that everything will be fine. Everything was not fine.<\/p>\n<p>Both performers are in tremendous voice. But somewhere past the 45-minute mark, mission creep sets in: the zany songs turn samey, choruses come round for third and fourth orbits, and the Americans-versus-Soviets briefings repeat as though the pair trusts neither the room nor the history lesson they\u2019d taught so well \u2013 re-explaining what the audience had already grasped. An insisted encore \u2013 \u201cone more song,\u201d demanded by nobody but the performers themselves \u2013 reprises a refrain already thrice heard, and Laika\u2019s farewell soliloquy drifts, rescued only by her gold-tinfoil space cape and a ripple of \u2018awws\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>A tighter final third and this eccentric production would soar; as it stands, the orbit decays.
