Where Gen Z seems to go along as an antidote to digital overload, the same hobbies are the only retirement lifestyle that many can afford.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These hobbies have a known cost, a known social circle, and no startup risk. It sounds whimsical, but Generation X is approaching retirement with roughly one-third of the savings baby boomers had at the same age, no pension safety net, and financial obligations to both aging parents and adult children at once. The slacker generation of latchkey kids has become the sandwich generation with a full house of both grandparents and children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strip away the nostalgia framing and what\u2019s left is a generation adapting to scarcity, and a slow-motion shift into retirement like the fadeout on a cassette tape.<\/p>\n<p>The largest generational wealth gap<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In December 2023, <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/12\/15\/gen-x-largest-wealth-gap-unprepared-for-retirement\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/12\/15\/gen-x-largest-wealth-gap-unprepared-for-retirement\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fortune reported<\/a> Gen X has \u201cthe largest wealth gap of any generation.\u201d Dan Doonan, executive director of the National Institute on Retirement Security, warned at the time that \u201cthe American Dream of retirement is going to be a nightmare\u201d for many in the cohort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.schroders.com\/en-us\/us\/institutional\/clients\/defined-contribution\/us-retirement-survey\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.schroders.com\/en-us\/us\/institutional\/clients\/defined-contribution\/us-retirement-survey\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Schroders U.S. Retirement Survey<\/a> for that year found Gen X expected to need $1.1 million to retire comfortably, but projected having only about $660,000 saved\u2014a gap of roughly $450,000. Deb Boyden, head of U.S. defined contribution at Schroders, told Fortune the stakes were higher and the margin for error lower. <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.schroders.com\/en-us\/us\/institutional\/clients\/defined-contribution\/schroders-us-retirement-survey\/readiness\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.schroders.com\/en-us\/us\/institutional\/clients\/defined-contribution\/schroders-us-retirement-survey\/readiness\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Schroders\u2019 most recent surveys<\/a> show the gap hasn\u2019t closed\u2014if anything, it has calcified. The shortfall between what Gen X believes it needs and what it expects to have saved still exceeds $460,000, an almost identical gap, and the generation accordingly has little confidence it can comfortably save for retirement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/news.northwesternmutual.com\/2025-09-09-Reality-Bites-Gen-X-is-Nearing-Retirement-and-More-than-Half-Dont-Believe-Theyll-be-Financially-Ready-When-the-Time-Comes,-According-to-Northwestern-Mutual-Planning-Progress-Study\" href=\"https:\/\/news.northwesternmutual.com\/2025-09-09-Reality-Bites-Gen-X-is-Nearing-Retirement-and-More-than-Half-Dont-Believe-Theyll-be-Financially-Ready-When-the-Time-Comes,-According-to-Northwestern-Mutual-Planning-Progress-Study\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Northwestern Mutual\u2019s 2025 Planning &amp; Progress Study<\/a> found Gen X believes it needs $1.57 million to retire comfortably, a number that sits uncomfortably next to what it actually has saved up. A separate 2025 analysis from the Retirement Income Institute\u2019s <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/gen-x-behind-retirement-savings-113000243.html\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/gen-x-behind-retirement-savings-113000243.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alliance for Lifetime Income<\/a> found median retirement savings for the cohort sitting at just $6,000 for women and $13,000 for men, describing Gen X as having \u201ca fragile retirement foundation\u201d that could leave it entering retirement \u201cless secure than any generation prior\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Going backward with known information, in this context, means recalibrating what retirement actually costs. A band is cheaper than a golf membership or a second home, and a skateboard doesn\u2019t need a cruise itinerary.<\/p>\n<p>A generation without a floor<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Baby boomers retired into a system built to catch them. <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/economy\/articles\/many-people-still-rely-pensions-210902455.html\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/economy\/articles\/many-people-still-rely-pensions-210902455.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Over 50% of the generation<\/a> had traditional pensions guaranteeing a fixed income for life, freeing them to plan retirement around aspiration rather than arithmetic. Only 18% describe themselves as \u201c<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.transamericainstitute.org\/research\/publications\/details\/four-generations-persevering-against-headwinds-uncertainties-prepare-for-retirement\" href=\"https:\/\/www.transamericainstitute.org\/research\/publications\/details\/four-generations-persevering-against-headwinds-uncertainties-prepare-for-retirement\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">very confident<\/a>\u201d they\u2019ll be able to fully retire with a comfortable lifestyle, and <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/theharrispoll.com\/articles\/the-joy-rematch-confidence-in-business-index-gender-gen-x-retirement-saving\/\" href=\"https:\/\/theharrispoll.com\/articles\/the-joy-rematch-confidence-in-business-index-gender-gen-x-retirement-saving\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">subsequent Nationwide research<\/a> found 16% say they\u2019ll retire later than planned, while 15% say they don\u2019t know if they\u2019ll ever retire at all.<\/p>\n<p>Caught from both ends<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The slacker generation of latchkey kids has become the sandwich generation with a full house. According to a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.pbc457.com\/rsc-preauth\/plansponsor\/news\/industry-insights\/help-gen-x-participants\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbc457.com\/rsc-preauth\/plansponsor\/news\/industry-insights\/help-gen-x-participants\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2024 Harris Poll for Nationwide<\/a>, 56% of Gen X investors now provide financial support to both aging parents and adult children simultaneously. Nearly a quarter\u201423%\u2014have reduced or halted retirement contributions specifically because of it, and 16% have already withdrawn from retirement accounts to cover the cost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Debt compounds the squeeze. Gen X carries more debt across nearly every credit product than any other generation\u2014mortgages, credit cards, and student loans.
