The newest Spidey sequel stars Tom Holland returning once again as New York\u2019s friendly neighbourhood superhero. While the movie is touted as a back-to-basics installment that sees Spider-Man squaring off against an earthbound enemy, the post-credits scene once again flings our favorite hero off-world to outer space. But where? And why?<\/p>\n
Because it\u2019s Marvel we\u2019re talking about here, you can guess what it probably means: a teaser for the upcoming Avengers crossover, Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. Yes, Secret Wars. We don\u2019t mean Avengers: Doomsday. (Probably.)<\/p>\n
Here\u2019s all we know about the post-credits scene for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and how it\u2019s setting up the near future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.<\/p>\n

Will Spider-Man return in Avengers: Doomsday or wait until Avengers: Secret Wars?<\/p>\n
Warning: Spoilers for <\/strong>Spider-Man: Brand New Day<\/strong> ahead.<\/strong><\/p>\n In Brand New Day, Tom Holland\u2019s Peter Parker reunites with his old friends, Ned (Jacob Batalon) and MJ (Zendaya). While they don\u2019t remember Peter (on account of Doctor Strange\u2019s spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home), Ned is still a Spider-Man fan. Early in the movie, Ned shows off his custom-built smartphone app that tracks Spider-Man\u2019s movements across New York City. It\u2019s basically just a GPS app for Spider-Man.<\/p>\n So, in the movie\u2019s post-credits \u201cscene\u201d (it\u2019s hardly a scene, really), Ned\u2019s tracker pings Spider-Man\u2019s location way outside New York. How far away from New York? On a different planet. (New Jersey?! No, just kidding.) Ned\u2019s app locates Spider-Man all the way on an uncharted, unnamed planet. And, well, that\u2019s the scene.<\/p>\n You probably already know that there\u2019s another huge Marvel movie on the horizon: Avengers: Doomsday. Tom Holland is not confirmed to appear in the new movie. (At least, for now.) But if you know the comics, this actually makes sense. Because the next Avengers movie in 2027 is Avengers: Secret Wars, which maintains a critical place in Spider-Man lore.<\/p>\n Could the Venom symbiote make an appearance in Avengers: Secret Wars?<\/p>\n In the original Marvel comic series Secret Wars, published in 1984, various Marvel heroes (including Spidey) are sent by the cosmic being called the Beyonder to a faraway alien planet: Battleworld. There, the many displaced Marvel heroes and villains are forced to, well, do battle, with the winner receiving their ultimate wish granted by the Beyonder.<\/p>\n In the eighth issue of Secret Wars, Peter comes in contact with an inky black parasite called the symbiote. Yes, that symbiote. The Venom symbiote. Secret Wars #8 marked the comic book debut of the symbiote, with Peter first contracting it before his work rival Eddie Brock would come into contact and become Venom in issue 300 of The Amazing Spider-Man.<\/p>\n As far as the MCU is concerned, the Brand New Day post-credits scene probably isn\u2019t teasing anything for Doomsday, because it\u2019s actually a teaser for Secret Wars. Ned\u2019s tracker picked up Spider-Man\u2019s signal on Battleworld (we\u2019re guessing), which is where Peter might touch a certain gooey symbiote. Might it be the same one that Tom Hardy left behind in the credits scene of No Way Home a few years back? Could it tie into the loose threads left behind in Venom: The Last Dance? We\u2019ll know eventually. Until then, don\u2019t expect Peter to show up in Doomsday.
