She relies on savings and occasional freelance work such as teaching English to rural children.Zheng belongs to what domestic media outlets call a self-driven wave of young Chinese people seeking slower, easier lives \u2013 an extension of the six-year-old <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/politics\/article\/3351681\/foreign-forces-promote-lying-flat-messages-undermine-chinas-economy-mss?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201clying flat\u201d trend<\/a> associated with rejecting excessive job competition and consumerism.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">In Mengzi county of southwestern Yunnan province, known for its sunny weather and rural flea markets, young city-escapees such as Zheng live cheaply and quietly.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">An entire apartment building floor rents for 3,000 to 5,000 yuan per year (US$443 to US$740), astronomically lower than in Shenzhen, she said.
