He realised the council was taking on a protected landscape and environment they knew little about – and he was the self-taught expert on all the ponds, nooks, crannies, bugs, birds and wildlife on the vast rambling grounds.

Over the years, despite early resistance, he forged a unique role as the go-to expert on Stoke Park, and is now a freelance advisor to the council, working with them on a number of projects over the years as the council invests in maintaining and improving the estate for the people of Bristol.

Ten years ago, he was hired by the University of the West of England to be its guide to Stoke Park, giving students of everything from applied sciences to geography the tours, sharing his decades of knowledge of the habitats, environment and flora and fauna there.

Conservationist Steve England fears the early bluebell flowering is a result of climate change

A UWE spokesperson said it was an honour to award Steve, who they described as a ‘wildlife conservationist, outdoor educator and local historian’. They said he was receiving an honorary master of science in recognition of his services to protecting the local environment and championing the Wallscourt Farm heritage, and its connection to the UWE Bristol Frenchay campus.

Steve told Bristol Live he was overwhelmed when he was told he would be receiving the honorary doctorate.

“I had to read the email five times,” he said. “I welled up with emotion, because my education was pretty much non-existent as a child, and for someone like me to get this is just amazing – a kid from a council estate who left school with no qualifications at all,” he added.

“I was categorised as ‘thick’ – my nickname was ‘The Plank’ as in ‘thick as two short planks’.
