We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 eRQajs\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>Former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/england-rugby\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">England rugby<\/a> captain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/phil-vickery\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Phil Vickery<\/a> has pledged to donate his brain for research into the damage caused by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/head-injuries\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">head injuries<\/a> having been diagnosed with probable chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).<\/p>\n<p>Vickery, part of the side that won the 2003 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/rugby-world-cup\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rugby World Cup<\/a>, was given a probable diagnosis two years ago, though CTE \u2013 believed to be caused by repeated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/brain-injuries\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brain injuries<\/a> \u2013 can only be confirmed after death.<\/p>\n<p>The 50-year-old is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/concussion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">concussion<\/a> lawsuit involving more than 1,000 players that accuses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/world-rugby\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World Rugby<\/a>, England\u2019s Rugby Football Union (RFU), the Welsh Rugby Union and the Rugby Football League of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/sport\/rugby\/rugby-union\/rugby-concussion-brain-injuries-cte-alix-popham-kat-merchant-b2927954.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">failing in their duty of care to protect those involved in the game.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/206911.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Phil Vickery toured twice with the British and Irish Lions\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Phil Vickery toured twice with the British and Irish Lions (PA)<\/p>\n<p>Vickery, who toured twice with the British and Irish Lions and won 73 caps for England, has admitted he has considered taking his own life but wants to ensure his brain can be used to further research into neurodegenerative diseases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that gonna make someone stand up?\u201d Vickery said in an interview with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/observer.co.uk\/news\/sport\/article\/ill-find-out-how-to-kill-myself-so-you-can-use-my-brain-to-prove-cte?utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=email\">The Observer. <\/a>\u201cI don\u2019t know. What a horrible thing to say. But what does it have to take?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the knowledge that we have now, it makes you wanna cry. Because it\u2019s f****** awful. Brain injuries are with you all the time, 24\/7, 365 days a year, and it weighs heavy, and it grinds at you all the time. It won\u2019t beat me. You know, I keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vickery retired in 2010 having captained England at the 2007 World Cup four years on from starting the final win over Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Thompson, another member of that side, has been diagnosed with early onset dementia and probable CTE, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/sport\/rugby\/rugby-union\/england-2003-world-cup-ben-cohen-matt-dawson-thompson-vickery-b2661229.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has said that he has no memory of the World Cup win.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit has reached a key juncture with hundreds of cases at risk of being struck out due to a failure in disclosure and an allegation that the solicitor who had led the case, Richard Boardman of Rylands Garth, had provided \u201cmisleading evidence\u201d to the court. Boardman\u2019s representation has now been terminated by the claimants.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Master Jeremy Cook has reserved judgement on the strike out decision.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his brain injuries, Vickery insists he would still do his career all over again if given the choice.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/106283533...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Phil Vickery retired in 2010\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Phil Vickery retired in 2010 (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sport\u2019s f****** amazing. Rugby\u2019s an amazing sport. You know, the sad reality is I sit here today \u2013 would I do it all again? Oh my God, I would. I\u2019m f****** mental, but I would because it\u2019s amazing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also sit here knowing there are lots of people out there, I believe, who are suffering because of the sport. And it\u2019s not about blaming the sport and about getting all nasty and horrible. Let\u2019s just f****** help people.
