Jason Statham<\/a> is one of the most well-known action stars on the planet, but he had a very different claim to fame in the life before. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s very possible that Statham is a tad underrated through today\u2019s lens. For the past 25 years, ever since breaking through in Guy Ritchie\u2019s crime caper Snatch, he\u2019s been a remarkably consistent presence in action cinema. A trained martial artist who performs the majority of his own stunts<\/a>, Statham has also remained fiercely committed to the theatrical experience. After all, there aren\u2019t many actors of his stature who have never made a television show or a streaming film.<\/p>\n

He also has a pretty strong track record<\/a> when it comes to the quality of his films, and even if there aren\u2019t many that would be considered all-time classics, he has a better ratio of hits-to-misses than Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, Gerard Butler or Liam Neeson.<\/p>\n

What many forget about Statham, though, is that before the movie sets, martial arts and seemingly endless supply of onscreen scraps, he was a professional diver. He even represented England at the 1990 Commonwealth Games, with his success in the sport eventually opening the door to modelling and, later, acting. Still, despite everything that came afterwards, Statham has admitted to carrying some regret over how his days on the diving board came to an end.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a bit of a sore point,\u201d he declared<\/a>, \u201cI never got to the Olympics\u201d.<\/p>\n

While Statham achieved a tremendous amount during his tenure as an athlete, the process of being involved in an Olympic team is even more complex and demanding. The 1992 Olympic Games in Spain would have been the next summer event that he could have possibly qualified for, as he would have otherwise had to train until the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, and while his commitment probably wouldn\u2019t have been an issue, his total focus on training for the Olympics might have prevented him from pursuing acting.<\/p>\n

The desire to win a major prize on behalf of one\u2019s country is quite understandable, and although there are opportunities to win in the world of acting, they\u2019re all subjective trophies handed out based on opinions, and generally involve campaigning and seducing voters, something Statham simply would not have time for, given how frequently he works. <\/p>\n

There\u2019s also the reality that he almost exclusively makes action films<\/a>, which aren\u2019t generally in contention for ceremonies like the Academy Awards or Baftas, with the only time he appeared in an Oscar-nominated film being with his cameo in Collateral, for which Jamie Foxx was recognised in the \u2018Best Supporting Actor\u2019 category. However, that doesn\u2019t mean that Statham hasn\u2019t used his diving career to inspire some of the more creative action sequences within his films. <\/p>\n

He\u2019s starred in two aquatic-themed monster films with The Meg and its sequel, and his upcoming action thriller Mutiny has been described as \u201cDie Hard on a ship\u201d. His comments about being at the Olympics were notably made at the premiere of the film Mechanic: Resurrection, which features several water-themed fight scenes surrounding its island setting, a change of location that was one of the more significant changes from the two instalments of The Mechanic franchise and the original film from 1972, which was a grounded urban thriller starring Charles Bronson.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
